Public Benefit Specialist

Job Overview Position involves interviewing uninsured/under‑insured patients at Carilion - New River Valley in Christiansburg, VA to determine eligibility for state Medicaid benefit or financial assistance programs, facilitating accurate application submission, following up to ensure timely billing or adjustments, documenting all actions in patient accounting systems, and building proactive relationships with caseworkers and revenue cycle departments. Location & Compensation On‑Site at Carilion - New River Valley, Christiansburg, VA. Pay range: $18.65–$20.50 per hour, based on experience. Key Responsibilities Interview patients to determine eligibility for state Medicaid benefit or location financial assistance programs. Assist patients with application processes to facilitate accurate and appropriate submissions. Follow up on submitted applications to ensure timely billing or adjustment processing. Effectively communicate with patients to obtain necessary documents for the application. Update applicable insurance information and document all actions and communications in patient accounting systems. Maintain knowledge of all state and federal program requirements and share information with colleagues and supervisors. Develop and maintain proactive relationships with county/state/federal Medicaid caseworkers and collaborate with other revenue cycle departments and associates. Perform other job duties as assigned. Qualifications 1–2 years of experience in the healthcare industry interacting with patients regarding hospital financial issues. Understanding of revenue cycle, including admission, billing, payments, and denials. Knowledge of patient insurance processes for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification. Knowledge of health insurance requirements, medical terminology, CPT, or procedure codes. Experience with patient access, managed care/insurance, and call center operations preferred. High School Diploma or GED; post‑secondary education considered for the role. Strong inquisitive mindset and openness to innovation including the use of AI to improve processes and patient experiences. Certification of CRCR required within 9 months of hire.
