Nutritionist for WIC Program

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking a Nutritionist to work with the Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) Program. If you like to work with infants, children, and women, this is a great opportunity for you. We are looking for a self-motivated Nutritionist to provide services for the WIC Program. The program is designed to provide supplemental nutritious foods and nutrition education as an adjunct to good health care during critical times of growth and development in order to prevent the occurrence of health problems and improve the health status of these persons. The WIC Nutritionist is responsible for assessing individual medical and dietary histories to determine WIC program eligibility, determining appropriate food packages, providing nutrition counseling and identifying medical/nutritional risk criteria for those customers applying for the WIC program, promoting breastfeeding and providing education, completing care plans, teaching classes, and promoting outreach events. The WIC Program is federally funded on a yearly basis. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday with some Thursday nights. Work week will not exceed 40 hours.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to express ideas and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Considerable knowledge of principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition and health promotion. Considerable knowledge and skill in nutrition and dietary assessment techniques (anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary), and in interpretation of data. Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effecting behavior change. Ability to write clear and concise entries using the protocol for progress notes in patient's medical records. Ability to interview and provide counseling. Ability to communicate with patients tactfully, courteously and effectively. Ability to work independently. Ability to do data entry in an efficient manner. Ability to adapt to the demands of a busy clinic.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, public health nutrition, or dietetics and one year of nutrition work experience; Must have a valid driver's license to drive to satellite clinics, conferences and meetings. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. Completion of an ADA approved dietetic internship with ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility preferred, or; Master's degree in nutrition or public health nutrition with ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provides nutrition counseling and education to participants in the WIC Program. Completes nutrition assessments by analyzing data obtained from participant interviews and review of medical history, laboratory and clinical data. Develops a care plan based on information collected and knowledge of clinical application of nutrition. Provides diet instructions to participants both verbally and with the use of educational aids such as pamphlets and posters. Charts in medical record subjective and objective data, assessment and plans of actions. Determines medical eligibility of participants for the WIC program using established guidelines. Provides nutrition consultation and education sessions to other health care professionals. Performs related work as required.
