Job Description Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) is a national leader in advancing security and resilience through innovative research. With campuses in Blacksburg and Washington, D.C., VTNSI serves a dual mission: (1) performing cutting‑edge research and development for DoD and Intelligence Community programs, and (2) cultivating the next generation of national‑security professionals through student engagement. The Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) seeks a Research Associate in Data Science to conduct AI and systems‑engineering research. This position may be based in Arlington, Virginia. Responsibilities Support ISD research in projects focused on design of experiments, time series analyses, anomaly detection, natural language processing, large‑scale data infrastructure, test and evaluation, computer vision, cybersecurity, and systems engineering. Contribute to technical documents, presentations, and peer‑reviewed academic papers. Provide mentorship to students working on ISD programs. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or related discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with significant related experience. Experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Experience with machine‑learning software packages such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Hugging Face. Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, R, JMP, or related statistical tools. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member on research or development projects. Evidence of high potential for excellence in research and development, demonstrated through academic study or professional experience. U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Preferred Qualifications Active security clearance. Experience working in an academic environment. Proficiency with generative AI, such as large language models. Experience in software development. Experience executing research or development programs supporting the federal government. Interest in working effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Additional Details Overtime Status: Exempt – Not eligible for overtime. Appointment Type: Restricted. Salary: Commensurate with experience. Hours per week: 40 hours.
