Senior Planner - Long Range

The City of Arvada is seeking a knowledgeable, community-minded, and forward-thinking Senior Long Range Planner to join our team. This role leads long-range comprehensive planning initiatives, provides policy recommendations, manages complex projects, and collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders to shape Arvada’s future. Essential Job Functions Provide strategic planning advice on long-range and short-term planning initiatives. Develop policy and strategic alternatives regarding planning goals and make recommendations on highly visible or sensitive issues. Manage special projects, including writing requests for qualifications and proposals, managing consultants, and reviewing consultant expenses. Coordinate with state and federal agencies, file reports, and manage grants. Plan and manage neighborhood and community planning processes. Assist and facilitate neighborhood groups in addressing development issues for city-initiated projects. Facilitate public outreach, develop partnerships with private property owners, and attend public meetings on behalf of the city. Review and develop proposed changes and amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan. Research, write, and propose plans, codes, and ordinances. Prepare demographic estimates and forecasts. Review and analyze complex development proposals, including land use, building permits, and variance applications. Provide zoning, development, and planning information to architects, developers, contractors, owners, appraisers, realtors, community groups, and the public (Planner of the Day duties). Attend team and organizational meetings, trainings, events, and represent the department professionally. Perform basic computer skills related to planning practices. Represent the city on regional committees or task forces. Supervise interns (as assigned). Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances governing planning, zoning, and subdivision activities. Strong knowledge of comprehensive municipal planning, urban design, site planning, landscape architecture, zoning subdivisions, public participation, and consensus building. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with city personnel and the public. Solid computer skills (spreadsheets, word processing, graphics, databases). Strong customer service, organization, and project-management skills. Ability to interpret and apply planning principles to land-development proposals. Ability to write technical reports and provide technical advice and recommendations. Exercise initiative and judgment, make decisions within the scope of authority. Effective communication of information to support organizational objectives. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle (valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record). Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS, BBA) in city planning, land use planning, urban planning or related field. A master’s degree or AICP certification may be considered. Experience: Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience. Experience in municipal planning, project management, and public policy is preferred. Other Qualifications: Pass a criminal background check and a driving record check if required. Physical Demands Minimal physical effort typical of clerical work. Primarily sedentary; may occasionally lift light objects. Walking or standing as needed. Work Environment Routine office noise and equipment. Minimal exposure to hazards.
