The Operating Room Circulator is responsible for the nursing care of patients while in the operating room. Participates as a team member or team leader in the planning and implementing of patient care. Able to utilize a body of nursing knowledge while giving direct and indirect patient care. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic technique and procedures as adopted by the Clinical Administrator. Offers leadership to O.R. technicians, medical assistants, aid central service technicians.

Responsibilities include coordinating the general flow of activities during case, being conscious of the patient as an individual and behaving with courtesy, kindness, and discretion, functioning in the roll of scrub nurse when needed, knowing basic principles of sterilization and disinfecting instruments and equipment, understanding aseptic technique, securing emergency equipment and supplies when and as needed, knowing the equipment and instruments necessary for specific procedures, assisting in positioning the patient properly, assisting the anesthesiologist/anesthetist, recognizing emergency situations and initiating proper action, completing forms and reports correctly, being alert, calm and courteous at all times, conforming to all rules and regulations governing the operating room, assisting in maintaining and processing supplies and instruments required in the operating room, assisting with obtaining special instruments, sets, and equipment as necessary from off-site locations, assisting with tracking equipment and instruments that have been loaned or borrowed, assisting with the training of new employees through mentoring, demonstrating interpersonal skills that promote a team concept, resolving problems through the appropriate chain of command, being positive and professional, and communicating effectively with surgeons, peers, and other health care members.

The position requires a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, current Tennessee state license, registered nurse licensure, membership in a professional organization preferred, current BCLS and ACLS certified within six months of hire, and preferably two plus years of experience in the operating room. The position also requires comprehensive knowledge of modern nursing concepts, working knowledge of center policies which govern the activities of the nursing division, ability to act efficiently and rationally in emergency situations, functioning as a team member with strong interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrating attention to detail and in meeting the needs of the surgeons.
