About Us The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. Description of Work To provide benefits counseling to 150 or more qualified individuals, informing them of the effects of employment income on disability and other benefits. This involves one on one counseling either face to face or virtual. A report is generated on the outcome of each assessment. A small amount of time is devoted to program outreach. Information is also provided on program and state work incentives which allows a person to work and receive benefits while testing work. Benefits counselors work in collaboration with public benefits agencies to ensure that consumers and service providers receive accurate, updated benefits information. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Range: $32,287 -$56,502 Recruitment Range: $32,287-$50,448 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Management Preferences are not required, but applicants that possess these skills are preferred. Work well with individuals with disabilities and individuals who assist them. Competencies in math, be able to write and analyze reports. Must be able to work independently. Management Preferred: Possess the credential of Certified Benefits Counselor or attain this credential from Virginia Commonwealth University upon securing employment. Position is %100 funded through federal funds. Position is eligible for a hybrid-teleworking schedule to include weekly onsite work hours. Posting closes at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date. Bachelor's degree in a discipline relative to the program served from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in an area related to program that provides experience in techniques of casework or counseling; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
