Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification Residency options: (1) A graduate medical education program approved by ACGME or AOA; (2) One year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice; (3) Non-US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States PRPs: Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers. PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed only on an intermittent basis, are not independent practitioners, and will not be privileged. They have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs. In rare circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director for approval of reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement based on a comprehensive record of experience and qualifications. Proficiency in spoken and written English Preferred experience: Board Certified in Psychiatry Physical requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 – Employee Occupational Health Service. Duties Provide psychiatric care in the outpatient Mental Health Clinic for the VA Maine Healthcare System, including the Mental Health Service at the Togus campus and Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Bangor, Portland, Saco, Rumford, Calais, Lincoln, Lewiston-Auburn, Caribou and other CBOCs. Participate in services at Togus campus: Mental Health Clinic; a 20-bed (expandable to 24 beds) locked inpatient unit; a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder program; an Addiction Services program; an Integrated Primary Care team; a Mental Health Intensive Case Management team; a psychology training program with interns and post-doctoral residents; and provision of Compensation and Pension mental health evaluations. Support tele-mental health program and collaborative research projects with other research sites. Assist in teaching medical students, psychiatry residents, social workers, interns, licensed clinical professional counselors, and other trainees under the VAMHS Associate Chief of Staff for Education. Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 07:30 am to 04:00 pm. Bargaining unit: AFGE Bargaining Unit position.
