Academic Advisor

Job Description:

Empire State University is hiring multiple Academic Advisors to join a fast-paced, rapidly growing online university built around access and support for our primarily adult learners. Most of the students you'll work with are transfer students seeking degree completion and/or more advanced degrees. As part of an experienced, student-centered advising team, you'll help students move toward their academic, professional, and personal goals with confidence. Your work will span a range of advising activities: reviewing students' goals, transcript reviews, and course recommendations in alignment with program requirements, cultivating relationships with assigned students, referring students to appropriate university resources, integrating career service resources, helping students build academic degree programs that align with their stated goals and supporting incoming students. Specific job duties may include:

• Manage an active caseload of advisees, participating in proactive outreach and advisement throughout advisees' time at the university.
• Support transactional advising needs during peak enrollment periods.
• Develop and maintain mastery of the university's academic program requirements, policies, and procedures.
• Work closely with students within associate, bachelor's and/or graduate degree programs to identify options that support a student's academic, professional, and intellectual goals whenever possible.
• Develop an understanding of and guide students through identifying university-level prior learning that may be eligible for academic credit, following established university procedures.
• On a limited basis, may be asked to teach sections of the university's course on Educational Planning to advisees/mentees where applicable by program.
• Promote and engage in the application of best practices, including data-driven improvements.
• Collaborate and share expertise with various university offices to advance holistic student support initiatives.
• Participate in regularly scheduled meetings for department updates, team building, professional development, governance, and university development.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

• Master's Degree from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university.
• A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in the higher educational setting with a role specific to academic advisement or student development.
• Excellent and effective communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work within a collaborative academic environment with faculty and staff from multiple departments.
• Desire and skills to effectively engage with learners in online settings, using both synchronous and asynchronous communication.
• Interest in a creative and team-oriented environment committed to continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of adult learning, learning technologies and online pedagogies.
• Experience working in an online environment.
• Experience with computer databases and web-based communications platforms including Banner, CRM, or other data management and tracking tools.
• Previous college teaching experience, preferably in one of the academic disciplines offered in Business, Education, Nursing, or any related fields.
• Prior knowledge of and experience working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.
• Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Special Information

• Occasional travel, as well as evening and weekend hours, may be required to fulfill departmental, divisional, and university-wide commitments.
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Rank/Salary: Academic Advisor, SL3 / $60,000.
