POSITION SUMMARY
The Organizer is responsible for growing and strengthening AFSCME Local 4041's membership in northern and southern Nevada through direct field organizing, member engagement, and worksite relationship building. The Organizer conducts one-on-one conversations with workers, builds organizing committees, supports New Employee Orientations, and executes field campaigns using the AFSCME Organizing Model. This role requires a deep commitment to labor and social justice, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a self-directed, field-based environment with variable hours and schedules.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Organizing & Member Engagement
- Conduct one-on-one conversations with State of Nevada employees at worksites, NEO events, and in the community to assess worker interests, identify workplace issues, and build support for union membership.
- Recruit, develop, and support organizing committee members and worksite leaders; guide their activities on behalf of the Local and coach them in effective member-to-member outreach.
- Execute field campaigns using the AFSCME Organizing Model including targeting, worksite reconnaissance, card campaigns, and member mobilization.
- Conduct phone banking, door knocking, and text outreach as part of structured campaign activities.
- Assess worker attitudes and maintain accurate, up-to-date worker assessment data in assigned organizing databases.
Steward & Leader Development
- Identify and recruit members for steward roles; connect stewards with training opportunities, campaign activities, and organizing resources.
- Coordinate organizing committee meetings; facilitate discussions that build member engagement and local leadership capacity.
- Work with the Senior Labor Representative/Organizer to identify members who can be developed as stewards and internal organizers.
Campaign Planning & Coordination
- Participate in daily team debriefs to report on field activity, worker contacts, and campaign progress.
- Develop and execute worksite-specific organizing plans; maintain clear worksite territory assignments.
- Assist in developing creative, lawful workplace action strategies that build worker power without work stoppages.
- Participate in biennial trainings, workshops, and AFSCME organizing programs to maintain and develop professional skills.
Administrative & Operational
- Maintain accurate records of worker contacts and campaign activities in assigned organizing databases.
- Complete expense reports and administrative tasks on designated admin days; respond to emails and correspondence in a timely manner.
- Keep Local leadership informed of organizing activity, campaign developments, and emerging worksite issues through established check-in and reporting structures.
- Maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation for field work across the northern or southern Nevada coverage area.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Local's operational and mission-driven needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge
- Knowledge of union organizing principles and practices, including the AFSCME Organizing Model or comparable structured organizing approach.
- Familiarity with Nevada public employee labor law, collective bargaining, and the regulatory environment governing State employees.
- Understanding of AFSCME Local 4041's mission and structure
- Working knowledge of organizing databases and digital field tools preferred; willingness to learn required.
Skills
- Exceptional one-on-one interpersonal communication skills; ability to listen deeply, identify worker motivations, and move workers to action.
- Strong written communication skills; ability to produce clear and compelling campaign materials and outreach correspondence.
- Strong time management and self-direction in a largely unstructured, field-based work environment.
Abilities
- Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends as required by campaign activities.
- Ability to build authentic, sustained relationships with workers from diverse backgrounds across multiple worksites.
- Deep commitment to labor movement values, social and economic justice, and the mission of AFSCME.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in union organizing, community organizing, or political field work.
- Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation required; ability to travel across northern Nevada.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience organizing in a public sector environment, particularly with State or municipal employees.
- Familiarity with AFSCME’s organizing model and Local 4041’s structure.
- Experience with organizing and voter contact database platforms preferred.
- Bilingual a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Primarily field-based with a home base at the Carson City or Las Vegas office; regular travel to worksites across Nevada required.
- Variable work schedule including evenings, weekends, and occasional extended hours during active campaign periods.
- Exempt (salaried); this role requires flexibility and commitment beyond standard office hours as organizing activities demand.
- Prolonged periods of driving, walking, standing, and conducting meetings in field environments.
- Regular use of computer, phone, and organizing technology; laptop and equipment provided by the organization.
