Dental Assistant

The Dental Assistant supports dental care delivery by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments, materials, and performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act. The Dental Assistant is responsible for chairside duties, assisting dental clinicians, including seating and preparing patients for treatment. Primary Functions Obtain and record vital signs, personal information, and medical history. Seat and prepare patients for treatments, arrange dental instruments, materials, medications, and pass them to dental clinicians as needed. Maintain cleanliness of the oral operating area using suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls, and related equipment. Sterilize dental instruments in autoclaves, dry‑heat ovens, or with chemical disinfectants, store sterilized instruments, and maintain asepsis during storage. Expose and process dental X‑ray films, mount and label films as indicated. Provide instructions to patients in postoperative care, oral hygiene, and the importance of preventive dentistry. 4‑Handed Dentistry Pre‑procedural rinse. Signed informed consent. Radiographs completed and available. Keep a dry field by monitoring mouth and throat for excess saliva and cleaning the mirror. Maintain light/visibility to the area of operation. Patient inclined or reclined. Room set up for a procedure or sterile field maintained. Radiographs Landmarks noted. Complete periapical and tooth apex radiographs. Bitewings have open contacts & all posterior teeth identified. Complete panorex diagnostic to include TMJ with no lead‑apron interference. EMR Documentation Demonstrate competency in EMR. Enter CDT or ICD codes for all procedures performed (PA bitewing, type of exam, restorative or prosthetic type). Accurate clinical notes dictated by providers on exams or other dictated information. Additional Responsibilities Complete Patient Safety Training curriculum. Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of equipment. Answer telephone and perform clerical duties as assigned. Schedule appointments and notify patients of upcoming or missed appointments. Contribute to the overall flow in the dental clinic via teamwork. Complete 8‑10 CEUs annually.
