Classification: District staff | Non-instructional/instructional support | Non-Exempt | Full-time, 30 hours/week, school-year calendar
ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
One City Schools is a K-8 charter school network in Madison, Wisconsin, dedicated to breaking cycles of achievement and opportunity gaps affecting children of color and under-resourced children. The organization operates three schools and serves as a model for 21st century equity-focused education reform. One City Schools leverages evidence-based educational frameworks including EL Education, CASEL-aligned social-emotional learning, TLAC strategies, and Habits of Character (Compassion, Risk, Integrity, Self-Respect, Persistence) to prepare all children from birth through higher education to tackle today's challenges, solve tomorrow's greatest problems, and lead successful, happy, and enriching lives as adults.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Transportation and Scholar Support Coordinator ensures that scholars experiencing homelessness have safe, reliable, and timely transportation to and from school every day, and that they have the same access as their peers to before-school programming, after-school programming, athletics, and clubs. For many scholars and families, this role is a critical, trusted point of contact and a determining factor in whether a scholar can attend school and participate fully in the life of the school community.
Transportation for scholars experiencing homelessness is this role's primary and ongoing responsibility. Instructional float support, provided by a staff member trained to deliver structured literacy tutoring support using the UFLI curriculum, is a valued secondary duty, carried out in the scheduled hours between transportation runs, so that no scholar experiencing homelessness misses a transportation option and classroom coverage needs are also met.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Transportation (Primary Responsibility)
- Transport students experiencing homelessness to school in time for a 7:50 AM arrival, and from school at the 3:30 PM dismissal.
- Provide transportation for students experiencing homelessness who participate in the school's before-school program (7:00–7:50 AM) and after-school program (3:30–5:30 PM), both offered at no cost to families; adjust the daily schedule as needed to accommodate students using these windows.
- Ensure students experiencing homelessness are offered the same opportunities to participate in after-school athletics and clubs as their peers, including transportation support so that participation is not limited by lack of transit.
- Develop strong, trusting relationships with all students being transported.
- Report any safety concerns regarding students to the Director of Special Education or Interim CPO.
- Report any safety concerns regarding the vans or other vehicles to the COO.
Instructional Float & School Support (Secondary Responsibility, Scheduled Block)
- Complete required training in the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) phonics program and apply it consistently in small-group and one-on-one instruction.
- Provide classroom coverage during scheduled meetings, emergency absences, or brief teacher breaks to ensure instructional continuity.
- Push into classrooms to deliver small-group phonics/literacy instruction, one-on-one student assistance, or character development support as directed by school leadership.
- Assist with supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
Vehicle & Route Management
- Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle safety checks and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date pick-up and drop-off route information for all students transported.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with school policy.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KEY COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; coursework or degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience working with children or youth in educational, social service, or community-based settings.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to be approved to operate a district vehicle or van.
- Demonstrated understanding of restorative practices, classroom management, and de-escalation strategies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a role with regular access to sensitive family information.
- Ability to pivot quickly and reliably between transportation, instructional, relational, and supervisory responsibilities across a variable daily schedule.
- Willingness to complete UFLI phonics training as a condition of the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Classroom teaching, substitute teaching, or instructional support experience, particularly in early literacy or phonics.
- Experience facilitating restorative conversations or behavior support interventions.
- Familiarity with culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices.
- Prior experience supporting students experiencing homelessness or other high-mobility populations.
Essential Competencies
- Reliability & Punctuality: Ability to consistently meet fixed pick-up and drop-off times, since a delay directly affects a scholar's ability to arrive at school on time.
- Relational Trust & Family Communication: Ability to build warm, trusting relationships with scholars and families who may be navigating housing instability.
- Confidentiality & Professionalism: Ability to handle sensitive family and student information in accordance with school policy and McKinney-Vento requirements.
- Instructional Flexibility: Ability to shift between transportation duties and small-group literacy instruction using UFLI phonics strategies.
- Safety & Compliance: Ability to operate a vehicle safely and report safety concerns regarding students or vehicles promptly.
- Time Management & Prioritization: Ability to protect transportation coverage as the primary responsibility while completing Float duties within scheduled blocks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Full-time, non-exempt role, 30 hours/week on a school-year calendar.
- Daily hours will vary depending on which students are using before-school (starting as early as 7:00 AM) and/or after-school (running as late as 5:30 PM) programming, rather than following a fixed 7:30 AM–4:30 PM schedule.
- Work occurs in a district vehicle/van, classrooms, hallways, and common areas.
- Requires driving, standing, walking, and active supervision for extended periods throughout the school day.
- May require responding to student needs in emotionally intense situations.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
