Qualifications/Skills

1. Valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License or verification from Secretary of State stating eligibility

2. Valid Illinois School Bus Permit or verification from Secretary of State stating eligibility

3. Pass a Regional Office of Education Fingerprint/Background Clearance including Federal Bureau of Investigation

4. Must be able to communicate verbally and through email in English

5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Qualifications

1. Must be able to complete driving responsibilities in a motorized vehicle in all types of weather and traffic conditions.

2. Must pass physical examination, pre-placement medical exam, and obtain Certificate for Illinois School Bus Driver as provided by the Secretary of the State of Illinois.

3. Medical Examination Report For Commercial Driver Fitness Determination as provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

4. Must be able to demonstrate and perform the emergency evacuation procedures as described and defined by the Illinois School Bus Driver Training Curriculum. These procedures involve, but are not limited to, sitting on floor of the school bus at the rear door and scooting out the rear door to the ground, and assisting students safely off the bus.

5. Must be able to occasionally lift, move, or push items of 50 lbs. such as office/transportation- office -related equipment and supplies. Job requires bending, lifting, pushing-pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to travel between job sites.

6. Generally, requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing.

Reports To: Director of Support Personnel Services

Job Goal: Safely providing safe transport for schoolchildren based on a schedule and route.

Performance Responsibilities

1. Drives school bus for the purpose of transporting authorized, regular education and/or special education students over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe, timely and efficient manner.

2. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections to vehicles, both interior and exterior, for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle

3. Fuels vehicle(s) for the purpose of maintaining it in a safe operating condition.

4. Notifies mechanics of mechanical defects of school vehicles.

5. Reports all accidents and police traffic stops immediately to the Director of Support Personnel Services and completes assigned reports, as required.

6. Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.

7. Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations (including bus evacuations) and normal transport.

8. Attends meetings, trainings, etc. as assigned for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of Illinois School Bus Driver Permit.

9. Communicates with parents, students, teachers, administrators, etc. for the purpose of conveying/receiving relevant information.

10. Performs first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health care needs of passengers.

11. Obeys all traffic laws.

12. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.

13. Keeps assigned bus clean.

14. Aptly adheres to assigned route/schedule.

15. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or tardiness.

16. Discharges students only at authorized stops.

17. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.

18. Monitors passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and discipline and reporting discipline problems to the proper authority using district policies and procedures.

19. Assumes responsibility for other duties as may be assigned.

Terms of Employment: 10 month work year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel (5:320).
