Oak Creek Public Works Mechanic

The Department of Public Works is divided into four distinct yet collaborative Divisions. The Public Works Divisions include Streets, Parks & Open Space, Forestry, and Street Lighting. This position supports all three Public Works Divisions and Fire Department vehicle maintenance.

Under general supervision, coordinates, directs, and performs skilled work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy gasoline and diesel-driven trucks and other mechanical equipment; identifies, orders, receives, stores, issues and maintains trucks parts and materials; prepares records, reports, and correspondence related to truck and equipment repair.

Duties, Functions and Supervision/Accountability

Oversees, maintains and operates preventative maintenance program for city equipment and vehicles; schedules and oversees all repairs or work needed on vehicles and equipment. Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.

Assists supervisors in directing, planning, reporting, evaluating, supervising, coordinating and improving maintenance operations, activities and services of the department. Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.

Examines and locates mechanical and operational defects in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment; makes major and minor adjustments and repairs.

Disassembles, repairs, grinds, replaces and adjusts engines, oil, water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering gear, tires and suspension systems on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Repairs, maintains and adjusts electrical wiring systems, charging systems, batteries and light systems on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Performs body repair work consisting of sheet metal and patching work, rustproofing, priming and painting on vehicles and equipment as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be: 1) possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D., 2) post high school education equivalent to one year of college or technical school in the areas of trucks and heavy equipment mechanics, 3) three years experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, and 4) demonstrated leadership ability with subordinates in past positions.

License/Certifications: Possession of a valid Wisconsin Motor vehicle operator's license. Candidate will be required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six months of hire. Loss of license may be cause for demotion, layoff or termination.

Special Conditions of Work

The schedule for this position is: Monday Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on-call for snow/ice operations and other emergencies, as needed.

Paid Time Off (PTO) Schedule: 1-3 Years 23 days per calendar year (pro-rated first year) 4-6 Years 25 days per calendar year 7-9 Years 28 days per calendar year 10+ Years 30 days per calendar year Holidays: Ten (10) per year as outlined in the City of Oak Creek Personnel Manual. Health Insurance: The City offers a self funded medical plan. Specific plan offered is subject to change each calendar year. Employees who waive health insurance are eligible for a waiver incentive paid into a deferred compensation plan; $3,000 for waiving family coverage, $1,500 for waiving single coverage. Employee is eligible for coverage on the first of the month following 30 days of service. City pays 100% of premium. Vision insurance: Voluntary (employee-paid) plan available through Superior Vision. Employee is eligible for coverage on the first of the month following 30 days of service. Family, limited family, and single options available. Flexible Spending Accounts (Section 125 plan): Medical Reimbursement and Dependent Care available for pre-tax savings on expenses. Pre-tax payroll deductions can be used to offset the cost of these expenses. Pension: Wisconsin Retirement Fund. Employee pays employee share of WRS contribution rate each pay period pre-tax. Life Insurance: Basic Life insurance equal to annual salary. Paid for by the City through the Wisconsin Retirement System. Effective the first of the month after 31 days of service. Additional units available at employee cost. Spouse and dependent coverage also available. Long Term Disability: The City provides and pays for core plan coverage for 75% of wage up to $27,000; employee has the option to buy-up up to 75% of full wage. Deferred Compensation (Section 457 retirement plan): Employees may contribute via payroll deduction toward a deferred compensation plan. Pre-tax and Roth options are available.
