Senior Accountant

Job Overview:
Search Solution Group is seeking a Senior Accountant on behalf of our client, an operator of bulk electric transmission solutions and facilities, located in Fishkill, New York. This position is responsible for supporting the timely preparation, analysis, and reporting of monthly financial results while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records. The Senior Accountant will oversee key accounting functions, including financial reporting, general ledger management, accounts payable oversight, regulatory reporting, and audit support. Reporting to the Director of Finance or Director of Accounting, this role will also mentor junior accounting staff, strengthen internal controls, and drive continuous process improvements that support the organization's financial and operational objectives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, analyze, and report monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee month-end and year-end closing activities
  • Review and oversee vendor invoices, accounts payable transactions, and related accounting processes
  • Reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statement footnote disclosures
  • Assist with annual regulatory filings, including Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reporting
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory requirements, and company accounting policies
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing documentation and coordinating with auditors
  • Manage accounting for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash flow, and corporate credit card transactions
  • Perform financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting to support business planning and decision-making
  • Research and interpret complex accounting standards and recommend appropriate accounting treatment for new or unusual transactions
  • Identify accounting or reporting issues and recommend practical solutions to management
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reporting accuracy, and internal controls
  • Assist with ERP system enhancements, financial software implementation, and staff training
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for assigned accounting or financial reporting areas
  • Mentor, train, and provide guidance to junior accounting staff while assisting with workload delegation and professional development
  • Collaborate with Finance, Human Resources, Operations, and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Participate in special projects and additional accounting initiatives as assigned
Requirements include:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Master's degree preferred
Experience:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience preparing financial statements and supporting month-end and year-end close processes
  • Experience supporting audits, regulatory reporting, and compliance initiatives
  • Experience mentoring or supervising accounting staff preferred
  • Utility, energy, infrastructure, or regulated industry experience preferred
Skills:

  • Strong technical accounting and financial reporting expertise
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • Experience with ERP accounting systems
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Leadership, coaching, and team development skills
Certifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Additional accounting or finance certifications are a plus
Knowledge:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Financial statement preparation and analysis
  • General ledger accounting and account reconciliations
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Internal controls and audit processes
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reporting requirements preferred
  • ERP accounting systems and financial reporting software
  • Regulatory compliance and accounting standards
