Principal Consultant (Lead Expert Witness) - FERC Ratemaking & Regulatory Expert Electric & Gas Pipelines Principal Consultant (Lead Expert Witness) - FERC Ratemaking & Regulatory Expert Electric & Gas Pipelines Location: Washington, DC The Firm Concentric Energy Advisors (“Concentric”) is an employee-owned management consulting and financial advisory firm serving the North American energy and utility industries. Since 2002, Concentric has built a national reputation for excellence in ratemaking and utility regulation, litigation support, market strategy, and financial advisory services , working with investor-owned utilities, regulators, and other industry participants on complex, high-stakes matters. The Opportunity We are seeking a FERC Ratemaking and Regulatory Expert to serve as a Principal Consultant and Lead Expert Witness on complex electric transmission and/or gas pipeline matters. This role is designed for an experienced professional who has personally led cost-of-service analyses, defended positions in contested proceedings, and provided expert testimony before FERC, including on prudence and cost recovery issues. This is a visible, client-facing leadership role, shaping regulatory strategy, leading engagements, and serving as a trusted advisor to senior utility leadership and legal counsel. Depending on background and preference, the role can emphasize electric, pipeline, or hybrid FERC ratemaking matters. *This is a hybrid role, with three days per week in-office in our Washington, DC location and two days per week working remotely.* What You Will Do As a Principal Consultant, you will own outcomes and credibility across the full lifecycle of regulatory and litigation-support engagements, including: Lead and review FERC cost-of-service, rate design, and revenue requirement analyses for electric transmission and/or natural gas pipeline clients. Advise clients on rate filings, compliance filings, settlements, and contested proceedings before FERC. Evaluate cost recovery issues, including capital investment, O&M, depreciation, return, and allocation methodologies. Expert Testimony & Prudence Matters Serve as lead or sponsoring expert witness in FERC proceedings, including preparation and defense of written testimony, exhibits, workpapers, and discovery responses. Provide expert analysis and testimony on prudence evaluations, cost reasonableness, and regulatory compliance. Support litigation strategy in close coordination with internal teams, external counsel, and client leadership. Participate in hearings, settlement negotiations, and technical conferences. Lead multi-disciplinary consulting teams and manage complex engagements from scoping through final deliverables. Act as a senior advisor to utility executives on regulatory risk, strategy, and positioning. Contribute to business development opportunities by leveraging professional relationships, regulatory credibility, and expert reputation. Help shape and evolve Concentric’s FERC ratemaking and litigation-support offerings, including mentoring junior staff and strengthening analytical standards. What Success Looks Like Successful candidates in this role are known for: Clear, defensible analysis that stands up under cross-examination. The judgment to balance technical rigor with regulatory strategy. The ability to translate complex ratemaking concepts for senior decision-makers. A reputation for integrity, credibility, and professionalism with regulators, clients, and peers. Ideal Candidate Profile Required Experience 10+ years of experience in FERC ratemaking and regulatory matters, gained through: Consulting, An investor-owned utility, A regulatory agency (including former FERC staff), and/or A Big 4 or similar professional services firm. Demonstrated experience leading FERC cost-of-service and ratemaking analyses for electric transmission and/or natural gas pipelines. Direct experience serving as an expert witness or sponsoring testimony in FERC proceedings, including prudence-related matters. Strong written and oral communication skills, with experience presenting complex positions to regulators, attorneys, and senior executives. Education Bachelor’s degree required (Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, or similar preferred). Master’s degree, MBA, or PhD strongly preferred, but not required. Additional Expectations Ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively in team environments. Strong attention to detail, organization, and professional judgment. Willingness to travel occasionally for hearings, client meetings, and regulatory proceedings (U.S. and Canada). Compensation & Ownership Base salary range: $168,000 - $297,000+, depending on level and experience, plus annual incentive compensation bonus.
