Cabin Counselor
Camp Somerset
Cabin counselors play a dual role at camp, residing with a specific bunk and age group while also contributing their expertise to a designated activity area. As role models, counselors are expected to embody qualities such as fun‑lovingness, creativity, patience, and a sincere commitment to the well‑being and growth of our campers. Counselors receive supervision from both a Division Head overseeing their age group and a Department Head responsible for their activity area. Within their cabin, counselors collaborate closely with three other counselors, fostering a supportive team dynamic. During the summer, counselors are allotted five days off to recharge and enjoy well‑deserved breaks throughout the day. Activity Departments Counselors will work in at least one activity area within our six departments. While we do not expect counselors to be “experts” in their areas, counselors must present strong aptitude in and passion for their activity area. Athletics: Tennis, Pickleball, Volleyball, Handball, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Street Hockey, Basketball, Softball, Archery, Football Creative Arts: Arts & Crafts, Culinary Arts, Outdoor Cooking, Woodworking, Ceramics, Jewelry, STEM Adventure: High & Low Ropes Course, TREE (Outdoor Ed), Camping, Mountain Biking Movement: Gymnastics, Fitness, Indoor Cycling, Martial Arts, Yoga, Fencing Department Heads Department Heads are members of our leadership team who carry the responsibility for the supervision and management of a specific activity area within the camp. This multifaceted role encompasses overseeing counselors engaged in the activities, managing facilities and equipment, and developing comprehensive lesson plans. Departments Heads serve in either Athletics, Aquatics, Creative Arts, Performing Arts, Adventure, or Movement. Nurse Our Health Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by health care professionals (RN, LPN, EMT) who are licensed, and are currently registered, or have reciprocity, to practice in the state of Maine. We are happy to assist an out of state nurse with obtaining a Maine license. Somerset has eight nurses and one doctor on staff. Support Staff Camp cannot run without the effort of countless others. Positions are available in maintenance, laundry/housekeeping, dining services, security, and office.
A TYPICAL DAY
Somerset’s professional and friendly staff spends its summer living, eating, teaching, coaching, and playing with our campers for seven weeks. The typical day begins at 7:45 a.m. and lasts until at least 9 p.m., which is bedtime for the youngest campers. Female cabin staff members live in cabins with approximately 12 campers and three other staff members. While your days are busy and filled with activity, Somerset provides its staff with ample time off to recharge. There is no better place to be during the summer than central Maine, which in addition to its natural beauty, offers an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities to take advantage of each summer. Most of Somerset’s staff are specialty counselors – on top of being a cabin counselor they teach and coach in one of our 35 activities. No staff member is limited to one area of camp all summer. We encourage staff to explore all of their talents and serve in several areas of camp. Fill out our interest form: to learn more. Have a question about working at Somerset? We’ve got the answer!
