Job Description

The Maintenance Technician plays a key role in keeping production equipment safe, reliable, and efficient, with approximately 60% of the work focused on mechanical systems and 40% on electrical and controls. This position is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining industrial machinery, supporting preventive maintenance programs, and resolving PLC-controlled equipment issues in a heavy industrial environment.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical systems including conveyors, belts, chains, sprockets, bearings, shafts, couplings, gearboxes, motors, pumps, and pneumatics/hydraulics as applicable.
• Perform precision mechanical work such as alignment, tensioning, leveling, and balancing of rotating equipment to ensure reliable operation.
• Provide fabrication support when needed, including cutting, drilling, and basic welding to repair or modify equipment components.
• Complete preventive maintenance activities, accurately document findings, repairs, and parts used, and contribute to the development of maintenance best practices.
• Diagnose root causes of equipment failures and recommend corrective actions to reduce repeat downtime and improve overall equipment effectiveness.
• Support equipment installation, rebuilds, and continuous improvement projects to enhance performance and reliability.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and consistently follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), OSHA, and plant safety rules.
• Troubleshoot and repair industrial electrical systems, including motors, starters, contactors, relays, overloads, solenoids, limit switches, photo eyes, proximity sensors, encoders, and other field devices.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts to identify issues and perform accurate repairs.
• Perform basic electrical tasks safely, including voltage checks, continuity testing, component replacement, and wiring repairs in 480V/3-phase environments.
• Troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control circuits to resolve operational issues and restore equipment to service.
• Support and maintain control panels, including troubleshooting I/O and communication issues to ensure reliable system performance.
• Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment to identify faults such as inputs not made, outputs not firing, and interlock or fault conditions.
• Navigate PLC programs at a basic level (for example, Allen-Bradley or Siemens) to check status, monitor logic, identify faulted devices, and assist with equipment resets and return to service.
• Collaborate with engineering and controls support to implement permanent fixes for recurring control and automation issues.
• Use test equipment such as multimeters and amp clamps, along with standard maintenance tools, to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems.
• Work safely and effectively in a physically demanding heavy industrial environment, including standing, lifting, climbing, and exposure to heat, dust, and noise typical of lumber operations.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 3 years of industrial maintenance experience in automotive manufacturing, lumber, sawmill, or heavy industrial environments, or equivalent mechanical troubleshooting skills with hands-on repair experience.
• Strong mechanical maintenance skills, including troubleshooting and repairing conveyors, gearboxes, motors, pumps, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
• Solid electrical troubleshooting experience, preferably in 480V/3-phase industrial environments.
• Demonstrated PLC troubleshooting knowledge, including monitoring logic, identifying faults, and performing basic I/O checks.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical prints and electrical schematics accurately.
• Proficiency in using test equipment such as multimeters and amp clamps, along with standard maintenance tools.
• Ability to perform preventive maintenance tasks and accurately document work performed.
• Capability to work in a physically demanding environment, including standing, lifting, climbing, and working in conditions with heat, dust, and noise.
• Strong safety mindset, consistently following lockout/tagout procedures, arc flash precautions, and PPE requirements.
• Effective troubleshooting skills in both mechanical and electrical systems to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience troubleshooting and repairing conveyor systems, including belts, chains, sprockets, and related components.
• Hands-on experience with hydraulics and pneumatics in an industrial setting.
• Ability to perform precision mechanical tasks such as alignment, tensioning, leveling, and balancing of rotating equipment.
• Basic fabrication skills, including cutting, drilling, and basic welding, to support equipment repairs and modifications.
• Experience troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control circuits.
• Familiarity with industrial field devices such as photo eyes, proximity sensors, encoders, limit switches, and solenoids.
• Experience supporting and maintaining control panels, including troubleshooting I/O and communication issues.
• Basic navigation of PLC programs (for example, Allen-Bradley or Siemens) to check status, monitor logic, and assist with fault diagnosis.
• Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability and performance.

Work Environment

The role is based in a dual-climate industrial facility where work takes place in both climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled areas. The environment is typical of heavy industrial and lumber operations, with exposure to heat, dust, and noise, and requires standing, lifting, climbing, and working around large machinery. Safety practices, including lockout/tagout, arc flash precautions, and proper use of PPE, are an integral part of daily work. You will use standard maintenance tools, test equipment such as multimeters and amp clamps, and work with mechanical, electrical, and control systems throughout the plant.

This is a Permanent position based out of Summerville, SC.

The pay range for this position is $56160.00 - $64480.00/yr.
