Training Academy Instructor

Assists in the development of Home Health Aide (HHA) training; provides instruction, supervision, and evaluation during lecture and clinical training.

Essential Functions:

• Assists in the development of the Home Health Aide Training Program and Nursing Assistant Training Program lesson plans and training materials, including PowerPoint, educational videos, student workbooks, evaluation tools, and resource guides.
• Conducts Home Health Aide and Caregiver training according to the approved lesson plans and program schedule, including Interpretation of Medical and Social Needs of People Being Served, Personal Care Services, Nutrition, Cleaning and Care Tasks in the Home, Infection Control, Patient Rights, Communication, Safety and Emergency Procedures, Promoting Independence of Patients, and etc.
• Conducts Nursing Assistant training according to the approved lesson plans and the program schedule, including Patient Rights, Communication and Interpersonal Skills, Prevention and Management of Catastrophe and Unusual Occurrences, Body Mechanics, Principles of Asepsis, Weights and Measures, Resident Care Skills, Resident Care Procedures, Vital Signs. Nutrition, Emergency Procedures, Long-Term Care Resident, Rehabilitative/Restorative Care, Observations and Charting, Death and Dying, Patient/Resident Abuse, etc.
• Demonstrates clinical training of basic patient care skills based upon the theory and clinical instruction presented in the classroom and supervises the return demonstrations of competence in these skills by the students. Signs off on the CDPH 276A Form for students after personally witnessing return skills demonstrations
• Attends clinical training site orientations and serves as a liaison between the training site and the Program Director.
• Ensures students meet the requirements of each clinical training site agreement.
• Provides immediate supervision of students in clinical training while they demonstrate clinical skills. The instructor may not have any other responsibilities while supervising the clinical training. A maximum of 15 students may be assigned to one instructor during clinical training and will operate within the hours agreed upon between the clinical training site and Self-Help Training Academy.
• Prepares student records, evaluates student performance and records scores and/or grades on the Home Health Aide Training Individual Student Record according to the approved curriculum and assessment tools.
• Participates in and leads as appropriate, in-service training and continued education programs for professional staff and Training Academy students, as well as quality assurance and performance improvement activities as needed.
• Reports to the Program Director for training progress, and maintains constant communication with the Program Director and Clinical Site Administrator to ensure student safety.
• Obtains a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing, and evaluating education programs in nursing within six (6) months of employment and prior to teaching a Nursing Assistant Certification Program.
• Attends and participates in mandatory meetings scheduled by Self-Help Training Academy management staff.

Qualifications:

• Current California Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and in possession of an active nursing license.
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution with at least two years of RN experience and one year of full-time employment with a Home Health program or in a Nursing Facility. (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 22 71829)
• Experience providing direct patient care in home health, hospice, acute or sub-acute; supervisory and/or teaching experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with people with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse backgrounds.
• Flexible schedule; able to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Bilingual in English and Chinese is strongly preferred.
• Current CPR Certification.
• Must pass health screening for TB clearance and physical examination.
• Must be able to travel via public transportation or personal/department vehicle for the performance of job duties. If driving, must have and maintain a valid CA driver license, satisfactory driving record, and auto insurance coverage as specified in Self-Help's policy.
