Job Summary

The Supervisor, Emergency Transport provides day-to-day operational and clinical oversight of ambulance and patient transport services for assigned site specific areas.

This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality transport operations, supporting patient flow, and maintaining alignment with system-wide standards established by the Senior Manager. The Supervisor serves as the frontline leader for transport teams, ensuring appropriate staffing, regulatory compliance, and real-time problem-solving to support Emergency Department throughput and interfacility transfers.

Competencies

Operational Oversight (Day-to-Day Management)

Oversees daily ambulance and transport operations across PWMC and HAMC, ensuring appropriate coverage and deployment.

Coordinates staffing assignments, schedules, and real-time adjustments to meet patient demand and throughput needs.

Monitors transport requests, prioritization, and turnaround times to optimize efficiency and patient flow.

Serves as the primary point of contact for operational issues, escalation, and incident response.

Collaborates closely with ED leadership, nursing supervisors, and bed management to support patient movement.

Clinical & Quality Oversight

Ensures delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based care in alignment with established EMS protocols.

Conducts real-time rounding and observation of staff to ensure adherence to clinical standards and best practices.

Participates in quality audits, chart reviews, and performance improvement initiatives.

Identifies trends, safety concerns, and opportunities for improvement, escalating as appropriate.

Maintains clinical competency and participates in frontline care as needed.

Staff Leadership & Development

Provides direct supervision, coaching, and support to EMTs and paramedics across both sites.

Assists with recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new hires.

Conducts performance evaluations, provides feedback, and addresses performance concerns.

Supports ongoing competency validation, certifications, and continuing education.

Promotes a culture of accountability, teamwork, and service excellence.

Standardization & System Alignment

Implements system-wide policies, procedures, and protocols across assigned sights.

Ensures consistency in operations, documentation, and clinical practice between sites.

Supports rollout of new initiatives, equipment, and process improvements.

Provides feedback to Senior Manager on operational challenges and opportunities for standardization.

Regulatory & Compliance

Ensures compliance with all EMS regulations, organizational policies, and accreditation standards.

Maintains readiness for audits and inspections.

Oversees vehicle readiness, safety checks, and equipment compliance.

Ensures staff certifications, licensure, and documentation are current and compliant.

Resource & Equipment Management

Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels for transport equipment and supplies.

Oversees ambulance readiness, restocking, and cleanliness.

Coordinates with vendors and leadership for equipment needs and repairs.

Supports fleet management activities in coordination with system leadership.

Communication & Collaboration

Serves as a liaison between frontline staff and leadership.

Facilitates effective communication across EDs, nursing, and ancillary departments.

Participates in local committees, huddles, and operational meetings.

Escalates critical issues and provides situational updates to the Senior Manager.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED – Required

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, EMS Management, or related fields preferred.

Experience:

3-5 years of experience as a Paramedic

Previous leadership experience preferred

Experience in hospital based or high-volume EMS systems preferred

3-5 years of work experience as a cleared Paramedic with in a high-volume hospital- based EMS system, 911 agency, inter-facility, transport agency or equivalent preferred. Specialty Care Transport or Critical Care Transport experience preferred. Previous leadership experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

Virginia Paramedic certification. American Heart Association BLS/ACLS/PALS Certifications. Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC II). Valid Driver's License - must produce acceptable DMV driving record.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

Must remain calm and organized in emergent situations. Must be available for rotating shifts as required. Must have keen sense of responsibility, ability to make decisions, and work independently. Must have good judgment. Must have basic computer knowledge. Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to interact effectively with the public. Perform IV/IO access; operate and maintain medication infusion pumps in both the ER and transport setting; perform orotracheal intubation; operate mechanical ventilators and high-flow airway devices; and monitor and maintain blood products and arterial lines. Operate under Rivanna–Rappahannock EMS Council’s Current Protocols and department specific protocols to include special MD orders.

Physical Demands

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment. The base compensation range for this role is $31.82 - $48.16 hourly.

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
