Interventional Radiology Tech Duties
Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologists are semi-professional healthcare providers who assist physicians in performing minimally invasive, image-guided procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and research State Universities Civil Service System. Their duties are defined by the state’s Interventional
Radiology Series Class Specification (4002)and align with the responsibilities outlined in job postings.
Core Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain specialized radiographic equipment such as fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and PACS systems, ensuring they meet quality standards State Universities Civil
- Prepare patients and sterile procedure environments before interventional procedures, including positioning, adjusting equipment, and performing safety checks State Universities Civil Service System.
- Assist physicians during diagnostic and interventional procedures by monitoring patient safety and comfort, passing instruments, and maintaining sterile fields
- Interpret and evaluate diagnostic data to support physician decision-making
- Administer contrast media and medications under physician supervision State Universities Civil Service System.
- Position and transfer patients on/off the radiographic table, and use immobilization devices as needed State Universities Civil Service System.
- Minimize radiation exposure by using protective devices and techniques State Universities Civil Service System.
- Monitor patient response during procedures, alerting physicians to any abnormal indicators State Universities Civil Service System.
- Clean and maintain equipment , report malfunctions, and ensure imaging quality State Universities Civil Service System.
- Document procedure details, contrast usage, and patient responses in electronic health records
- Follow federal, state, and institutional regulations and professional guidelines
REQUIREMENTS
- Complete high school or GED with science coursework.
- BLS, Min 1-2 Years experience in field
- Earn an accredited associate or bachelor’s degree in radiologic technology.
- Pass the ARRT radiography exam to obtain the Radiography (R) credential.
- Gain clinical experience and complete specialized IR training.
- Obtain postprimary ARRT certification in vascular interventional radiography.
- Acquire state licensure and maintain credentials through continuing education.
Following this pathway ensures that IR technologists are fully qualified to perform minimally invasive, image-guided procedures safely and effectively, supporting advanced patient care in interventional radiology
