General Description Of Position

This safety sensitive CDL position (SS) purpose is to drive a commercial rated vehicle along residential routes to collect refuse and recycling. This position is considered an entry level position for someone in training.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

1. Inspects truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced, and fueled.
2. Drives a reload refuse truck along a route to collect refuse; transfers refuse to a landfill.
3. Empties refuse into the truck.
4. Performs such routine maintenance and minor repairs on the truck.
5. Cleans truck inside and out.
6. Basic customer service responsibilities dealing with citizens and City employees in performing assigned duties.
7. Drives pickup truck and trailer along residential route for picking up recycling.
8. Attend safety training and other classes as directed.
9. May have oversight of sanitation workers assigned to route.
10. Operating a city vehicle is required for the essential functions.
11. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education And Experience

Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines. Equivalent to four years high school or GED, with particular emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 0 to 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Communication Skills

Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

Critical Thinking Skills

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out simple multi-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with limited variables.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Class B CDL license with air brakes endorsement required to operate assigned equipment or Training to obtain CDL.
