Heavy Diesel Equipment Mechanic

The Equipment Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of diesel-powered construction equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, water trucks, and generators. This role ensures RDC's fleet operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate brings technical knowledge of diesel systems, hydraulic troubleshooting ability, and the capacity to work both in-shop and on remote job sites. Essential Job Functions may include the following or other duties as assigned: Diagnostics & Repair Perform comprehensive inspections and diagnostics of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drivetrains, and cooling components. Troubleshoot and repair issues with fuel systems, DEF systems, and emissions components. Repair or replace engine components, hydraulic cylinders, pumps, undercarriages, and powertrain assemblies. Preventive Maintenance Conduct scheduled PM services (oil changes, filter replacement, lube service, etc.) to minimize equipment downtime. Maintain service logs and condition reports for all fleet assets. Track usage hours and prioritize maintenance based on schedules or usage-based triggers. Field Service Support Perform mobile repairs and emergency response service at job sites. Coordinate fieldwork with equipment operators, superintendents, and dispatch. Operate service truck and maintain tools, equipment, and inventory onboard. Parts & Equipment Management Source and install replacement parts as needed, ensuring cost-effectiveness and OEM compatibility. Assist with parts ordering, inventory control, and warranty processing. Maintain organization and cleanliness in the shop and on mobile rigs. Safety & Compliance Adhere strictly to OSHA, DOT, and company-specific safety protocols. Lockout/Tagout procedures and safe lifting practices must be followed at all times. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area. Documentation & Communication Complete work orders, service reports, inspection sheets, and maintenance logs with clarity and accuracy. Communicate equipment issues and repair timelines to supervisors and operators. Recommend improvements to maintenance programs or procedures when needed. Requirements/Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. High school diploma or GED (technical certification in diesel technology preferred). 3+ years of hands‑on diesel mechanic experience (construction or heavy equipment preferred). Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics. Familiarity with diagnostic software. (Komatsu, CAT, FORD, GMC) Strong understanding of safety protocols and mechanical best practices. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. ASE certification (preferred) Valid Class A or B CDL with clean driving record. (preferred). Exposure to diesel exhaust, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and varying weather conditions. Travel between job sites may be required using a company service truck.
