Law Enforcement OfficerThe Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 20,000 students, and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest-rated high school in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas, and our student population is approximately 58% Hispanic, 22% African American, 8% White, 7% Asian, and 4% Pacific Islander. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers.Job GoalTo educate, mentor build relationships with students, staff, and community, develop partnerships with school district and community stakeholders, and to enforce district policies, local, and state laws.Essential FunctionsAs a first responder the LEO must possess sufficient strength, endurance, and skill to provide direct services, first aid and emergency care to students and staff guided by administration and the school nurse nursing process and in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates.Must be able perform to CPR and use an AED (if available)Report/support the school and/or Truancy Officer in investigating reports of TruancySupport the school in contacting students and parents of students who are chronically absent and such other absent students as directed by the principalContact parents or legal guardians to verify residence in the school district and/or attendance zonePatrol assigned buildings and grounds to prevent theft, vandalism and illegal entryConduct routine inspection of doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secureConfront and question alleged unauthorized persons in the school building or on school groundsInvestigate and report all alleged violations of Local, State, and Federal law.Investigate and report alleged violations of school district rules and regulations and school code of conduct as requested by the school principal.Contact local police when/if needed for additional support and file such reports as are appropriateProvide security for extra-curricular activities which occur outside of the normal instructional day. Obtain additional officers to work activities when additional help is neededAttend school functions as directed by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief or Sergeants making assignments.File all Offense Reports and related Incident Reports for all cases of criminal activity or misconduct in assigned schools, or within the district.Participate with other attendance, and security officers and LEO's in district wide security efforts as directed by Chief of Police of designee.Must have transportation to travel to elementary schools to assist as necessaryMust demonstrated customer-centric skills, greeting and handling of the parents, employees, students and visitors to the building, both adults and childrenPerform such other duties as may be requested by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, Sergeants, Principals or other immediate supervisors in the general areas of attendance, security or pupil and staff services.Special RequirementsLEO Certification/CommissionPossession of a valid motor vehicle operator's licenseCertification in CPR. Certification as First ResponderOfficers must be eligible to obtain their law enforcement commission with the State of Kansas and upon being sworn in before the Board of Education, the officer will be officially a Kansas City Kansas Public School District Police Officer.QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED certificateVerified successful experience in law enforcement 2 year minimumFormal course work and/or training in law enforcement proceduresHave or eligible for law enforcement commissionMeet minimum health and fitness standardsMust be a least 5'2" in height (KSA 44-1110)Must pass drug screening and alcohol testValid driver's license and an automobileCommunication / OrganizationMaintains communication with internal and external stakeholders such as Board of Education, Educational Agencies, Federal/State/Local agencies, teachers, other school personnel, parents/guardians, businesses, and community to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Compiles data for statistical purposes. Maintains confidentiality regarding district records. Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants as needed to carry out duties.Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
