Standardized Patient

Position Information At the UCR Center for Simulated Patient Care (CSPC) at the School of Medicine, Standardized Patients (SPs) portray patients, family members, or others to allow students to practice physical exam skills, history taking, communication skills, and other exercises. SPs learn symptoms, personality traits, and other characteristics of a patient and perform them in a standardized way. For a patient role, SPs receive case materials in advance of training that must be memorized to accurately portray the patient with a learner (medical student, resident, or doctor). Physical examinations are required in some cases and are performed on skin. SPs wear a patient gown over undergarments during physical exam cases. There are no invasive exams or procedures. SPs may provide feedback through oral and written communication and may complete checklists indicating the learner’s performance. Salary: $21.00 - $30.00 per hour. Role is per diem and scheduled on an as-needed basis. Applicants must have current work authorization. The University will not sponsor or take over employment visa sponsorship. Responsibilities Memorize and portray patient case materials accurately. Perform physical examinations as required. Wear appropriate patient gown during exams. Provide oral and written feedback on learner performance. Complete checklists to indicate what the learner did or did not do. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Advanced degree. 2-4 years of related experience. Prior experience as a standardized patient. Minimum Requirements Interpersonal communication skills and ability to work well with students, faculty, staff, and guest professionals. Verbal and written communication skills to clearly and effectively convey and present information to diverse groups. Demonstrated ability to synthesize case information and portray characters in a believable and accurate manner, including a variety of symptoms and character affects. Willing to be audio and video recorded during simulations. Punctual, prepared and present for all scheduled events. Preferred Qualifications Thorough technical acting or dance (or related specialty) skills and proficiency and demonstrated expertise. Familiarity with some medical terminology and procedures.
