Habilitation Specialist (Respite)

Description Job Summary At the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester, we believe every individual deserves to feel seen, supported, and fully included. The YWCA Habilitation Specialist plays a vital and compassionate role in supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities within both adult and child respite programs. This position is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where participants are encouraged to build independence, develop life skills, and experience meaningful social connections. Working closely with participants, families, and interdisciplinary teams, the Habilitation Specialist implements individualized service plans tailored to each person’s unique strengths, goals, and needs. Through patience, empathy, and creativity, they provide hands‑on support with daily living activities, promote positive behaviors, and facilitate engaging recreational and educational experiences. This role is rooted in dignity and respect—ensuring every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. The Habilitation Specialist serves not only as a caregiver, but also as an advocate, mentor, and trusted support, helping participants thrive while providing families with peace of mind and essential respite. Grounded in person-centered practices and aligned with OPWDD standards and core competencies , this role blends structure with heart—supporting not just safety and participation, but growth, independence and joy. Requirements Key Responsibilities Develops and implements person-centered activities to meet the individual’s needs, abilities, and interests. Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as needed (e.g., toileting, feeding, transitions). Implement behavioral support strategies using positive reinforcement and redirection. Promote social interaction, confidence, and independence. Maintain line‑of‑sight supervision and respond calmly to any safety or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with supervisors, families, and team members regarding participant needs and updates. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities. Serve as a positive role model and contribute to a supportive, inclusive respite culture. Core Competencies Person-Centered Support: Tailoring support to the individual’s preferences and strengths. Professionalism & Ethics: Upholding dignity, respect, and confidentiality. Mandated Reporting: Understanding and adhering to Justice Center requirements. Team Collaboration: Working closely with staff and leadership. Qualifications Must be 18 years or older High School Diploma or GED required Experience working with children or individuals with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred CPR, First Aid and medication administration certifications Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as well as stand, kneel & squat Strong communication and interpersonal skills A valid driver’s license for transporting individuals or traveling to community sites Bilingual (highly preferred) Certifications & Requirements Must pass required background checks (Justice Center, etc.) CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) Completion of required OPWDD/DSP trainings upon hire Working Conditions weekend schedule (Saturday & Sunday) during the 10-month Respite program Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, including aquatics and recreational spaces Active role requiring standing, walking, and assisting individuals throughout the day May include supporting individuals with physical, behavioral, or sensory needs Preferred Qualifications (Add-On) Completion of Direct Support Professional (DSP) Core Competency training aligned with OPWDD standards is preferred. Candidates with or working toward certification through the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) are strongly encouraged. Compensation $22.00-$25.00 per hour #J-18808-Ljbffr YWCA
