Registered Nurse (RN) - SANE Program

SANEs collect forensic evidence and provide trauma informed care to victims of sexual assault and interpersonal violence. SANEs are a necessary part of the interdisciplinary care team to maintain chain of custody, collaborate with law enforcement and ensure forensic services are available to the community at large.

Core Duties

Demonstrates proficiency in patient care, clinical documentation, physical assessment, and attention to detail.

Ability to perform comprehensive assessments and maintain accurate, timely documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills required to interact with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

Job-Specific

Conducts medical forensic exams, which include a thorough history taking, evidence collection, and post exposure prophylaxis recommendations.

Maintains chain of custody of all evidence and/or paperwork.

Collaborates with law enforcement on a routine basis.

May be subpoenaed to testify in court as a fact or expert witness.

Maintains competency of skills by participating in case reviews, routine trainings and attending educational sessions and meetings.

Other Information

Maintains availability for a minimum of thirty-two (32) on-call hours per scheduling period.

Provides coverage as required to support a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year program.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education

Post-high school diploma or Associate's Degree in Nursing.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of direct patient care nursing experience preferred.

Credentials

Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

Successful completion of the West Virginia Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (WV-SANE) Adult and Adolescent Training Course required.

WV Adult and Adolescent SANE Certificate required within four (4) months of completion of the training course.

Working Conditions

Responds to call notifications for examinations with an expected arrival time of no less than and no greater than two (2) hours from the time of contact.
