Animal Control Officer

Shiawassee

The Shiawassee County Animal Control Officer enforces animal laws, including responding to and investigating complaints related to stray animals, vicious dogs, animal bites, suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect, dead or injured animals, livestock killings and other related activities. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Shiawassee Animal Control Officer (ACO) works with the Shiawassee County Humane Society, enforcing state laws and local ordinances dealing with animal control and issuing citations for violations. The ACO responds to citizen complaints regarding domesticated animals, reports of cruelty or abuse, injured wildlife, animal disturbances, animal bites to humans and other related concerns. The ACO investigates and documents incidents and performs follow‑up as required in relation to animal control services. The ACO has the ability to use bite sticks, pepper spray, and TASER to capture and impound animals. The ACO captures and impounds dogs and cats that have bitten individuals to quarantine them as required. Cleans and sanitizes the animal control vehicle and conducts inspections of kennels within the County. QUALIFICATIONS Must be 18 years old and be a United States Citizen High School diploma or equivalent Have successfully completed police academy training or its equivalent as required by MCOLES or possess current MCOLES certification; OR Have successfully completed the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development training program to attain certification. Valid Michigan operator’s license and ability to operate vehicle to patrol the county and investigate complaints. Ability to subdue, capture, and transport animals. Ability to collect and transport dead animals. Ability to lift heavy animals. Ability to hold and control vicious animals. Successfully complete training in the principles and practices of the care and handling of friendly or aggressive animals and the Michigan criminal and civil court system related to animal abuse, cruelty and neglect within six months of hire date. Successfully complete training in animal behavior, humane capture of animals, animal control ordinances in the County, identifying animals that are victims of abuse, cruelty, and neglect, interviewing witnesses, and obtaining information about applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations. Successfully complete training in the use of a variety of animal control equipment, including but not limited to tranquilizer guns, bite sticks, pepper spray, nets, traps and other equipment as necessary. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, run and move freely at any time. Ability to work a non‑traditional work week and respond to emergencies or service needs when necessary. The employee must frequently lift and/or push/pull or move objects of up to 75 pounds without assistance and be able to restrain and/or control aggressive animals.
