Bus Driver Job Description

Position Title: Bus Driver / Full-Time - Supervises: N/A

Job Goal: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school district's curricular and extracurricular program. - Qualifications: As outlined below

Reports To: Transportation Manager - Salary: To be determined by the local Board of Education

Qualifications:

1. Possesses high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Possesses valid state driver's license with no prior convictions or violations.
3. Must pass all state school bus training requirements and be eligible for certification.
4. Successfully completes and passes medical examination conducted by contracted Board physician. Medical examination will include eyesight, hearing, cardiovascular system, manual dexterity, reflexes and urinalysis, as well as condition of overall general health.
5. Must be insurable under the liability/comprehensive insurance carrier of the Board. Must remain insurable throughout employment tenure.
6. Must maintain a personal and job related driving record that meets the insurance carrier's criteria for liability coverage for the Phenix City Board of Education.
7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Obeys all traffic laws.
2. Maintains a valid state and special school bus driver's license, without any vehicle violations.
3. Notifies the Transportation Manager within seventy-two (72) hours of any personal vehicle citations.
4. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
5. Maintains discipline when students are on the bus.
6. Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
7. Keeps assigned bus clean.
8. Keeps to assigned schedule.
9. Checks bus before operating for mechanical defects.
10. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
11. Discharges students only at authorized stops.
12. Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
13. Transports only authorized students.
14. Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
15. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on bus.
16. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to pass state skill test, state written test, and Department of Transportation Physical and MDE Basic Training Program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools, and is continuously driving on the job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
