Physician (Hospitalist) (Columbia Township)

Job Summary

We are seeking a Hospitalist (Board Certified in Internal Medicine) to join our team in Columbia, MO. This open-continuous announcement will remain open until June 21, 2027, or until vacancies are filled. Applicants may be referred and tentatively selected while awaiting completion of training or license requirements, but final hiring will occur only after all requirements are met.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements described in the announcement.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited).
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree must have been obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year of completion.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.
• Residency options:
  • Approved ACGME or AOA core specialty program.
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice.
  • Non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent U.S. practice.
• Residents currently enrolled in an accredited residency program may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis.
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and will perform duties under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: pre‑employment physical; lifting 15–44 pounds; pushing (~2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing 3–5 hours; kneeling; rapid mental and muscular coordination; near and far vision as specified; depth perception and color discernment; hearing aid permitted.

Additional Requirements

• Must be board certified in internal medicine.
• Recent graduates must be board eligible with intent to become board certified within one year of hiring.

Responsibilities

Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

• Provide general internal medicine care of inpatient services in accordance with VA standards.
• Participate in educational activities related to the internal medicine residency program.
• Collaborate with physician extenders and nursing care providers throughout the hospital.
• Serve as a resource for primary care providers to ensure smooth transition of patients from inpatient to outpatient settings.
• Provide expertise in multispecialty and patient care–related discussions.
• Offer inpatient general internal medicine consultation services to non‑medicine teams, including direct supervision and education of house staff.
• Perform inpatient internal medicine attending services, including clinical procedures within your specialty area of expertise on the general medicine teams.
• Serve on committees as requested by the Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff, or Deputy Chief of Staff.
• Follow the Medical Staff bylaws and complete all medical records in a timely manner through CPRS in accordance with VA policies and regulations.
• Participate in ongoing process improvements within your area of expertise to promote quality, efficiency, patient safety, and timely access to care for veterans.
• Participate in inter‑hospital transfers of patients as needed.
• Perform medical diagnostic evaluation and initial assessment of patients, including focused history, physical examination, and pertinent laboratory investigations.
• Evaluate all new admissions to the medicine team, completing an Admission History and Physical (H&P) or a short‑form admission note as appropriate.
• Perform basic procedures expected of a board‑eligible internist, including lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, and paracentesis.
• Supervise residents, students, fellows, or teams assigned to your area of responsibility.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or as prescribed by the Chief of Staff.
