Senior Application Developer, Platform Modernization (New York City Metropolitan Area)

Role Summary

Cogency Global is continuously modernizing its technology behind its corporate, legal, and compliance services, and we are looking for senior engineers who love this kind of work. You are a product builder first who is, equally comfortable with an existing codebase, data, frameworks, as well as cloud-native services and modern product development practices.

You are the engineer others seek out when something is hard. You teach as naturally as you build, through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on work, and the engineers around you get better because of it. You use AI coding assistants and agents as a genuine force multiplier, and you are disciplined about verifying what they produce. You will join one of our scrum teams as a senior contributor and informal leader, owning significant pieces of product engineering from analysis through go live. You are customer-obsessed and care deeply about the quality of your work and your team’s success.

Key Responsibilities

• Own significant pieces of roadmap delivery, such as an application, a business domain, or a shared service, from analysis of code and data through production on AWS.
• Analyze existing code base with patience and precision, surface the real business rules, and re-express them as clean, well-tested service code.
• Build APIs and event producers and consumers that are contract-first, idempotent, observable, and easy for other teams to use.
• Write infrastructure and pipelines alongside application code so every service is reproducible, monitored, and secure by default.
• Prototype and harden AI-enabled features such as document understanding, retrieval, and agent tools, working with leads on evaluation and guardrails.
• Use approved AI coding assistants and agents to accelerate refactoring, test generation, and documentation; independently verify correctness, security, and maintainability; and show teammates how to do the same well.
• Pair and review generously, helping engineers who are new to AWS, PostgreSQL, event-driven design, and modern patterns become productive quickly.
• Take technical direction from the Development Lead and work with the Manager of Application Development, to help the team grow its modern engineering skills.
• Contribute reference implementations and templates, in partnership with Platform Developers and architects, that follow shared engineering standards and are adopted across scrum teams.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering, with significant time building and supporting customer-facing or technology enablement products.
• Expert in Java or C#, with working fluency in the other; comfortable picking up new languages and frameworks quickly.
• Strong SQL and data modeling skills, including moving business logic from the data tier into application services; experience with PostgreSQL.
• Hands-on AWS experience building and running services on Linux (containers, serverless, messaging, managed databases) with infrastructure as code.
• Has designed and built REST APIs and asynchronous, message-based integrations.
• Skilled, daily use of AI-assisted development tools, including agentic coding workflows, with sound judgment about verifying correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Strong engineering hygiene: automated testing, CI/CD, code review, and observability.
• Experience working in scrum teams and mentoring other engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Has built agentic services in production (for example Amazon Bedrock, AgentCore, retrieval-augmented generation, MCP, tool use).
• Experience with strangler-pattern migrations, change data capture (for example AWS DMS) or large-scale data reconciliation.
• Java experience, particularly with messaging or platform services.
• Angular experience.
• Domain experience in compliance, legal, corporate services, or financial services.
• AWS Associate, Professional, or Specialty certification.

Your First 30 Days

You will learn the business through delivery, working alongside experienced teammates and within established engineering and security controls.

• Days 1–10: complete onboarding and access, trace one business capability through the C#/.NET code and SQL Server, add tests that capture its existing behavior, and begin a bounded migration task.
• Days 11–20: implement the AWS and PostgreSQL increment with automated tests, reviewed schema and data changes, and a repeatable deployment pipeline, validating behavior and data against the existing implementation.
• By day 30: deliver the increment to an AWS development or test environment with reviewed code, passing validation, operational visibility, and a documented release and recovery approach. Production release follows our normal approval gates.
