School Resource Officer

Position Overview Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, the School Resource Officer will perform policing and law enforcement duties in a school environment. Responsibilities include the safety of the public, community engagement, incident response, and investigative functions in accordance with Florida Statutes and departmental policies. Responsibilities Conduct routine preventive patrols of assigned school premises. Patrol school grounds to detect violators and maintain a secure environment. Initiate and maintain open communication with school residents, business operators, and the broader community. Respond promptly to police service calls, public disturbances, and other incidents, attempting resolution through counseling and referral when appropriate. Handle complaints from the school community and provide assistance and information to the public. Interact with diverse groups of people and coordinate resources among other department employees and public or private agencies. Provide referrals to city, county, state, federal, and private agencies, and maintain the peace and safety of the school community. Manage traffic flow, enforce traffic laws, and promote vehicle and pedestrian safety. Report unsafe road and travel conditions. Conduct criminal and non‑criminal investigations, including initial investigations, follow‑up investigations, and surveillance as required. Enforce laws and arrest lawbreakers, issue notices to appear and traffic citations, and prepare written reports and supplemental documents. Use computers for report writing, communication, and information retrieval. Participate in mandatory training, maintain professionalism, and practice ethical behavior. Travel to adjacent schools for off‑duty details when required. Requirements United States citizen, minimum 21 years of age. High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Certified State of Florida Police Officer with at least 5 years of law‑enforcement experience. School Resource Officer certification upon completion of a department‑sanctioned course. Pass the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) with a score of 79 or a competitive civil service exam in law. Pass a swim test, polygraph or computer voice stress analysis, psychological screening, extensive medical evaluation, and drug screening. Pass drug detection by hair analysis and an extensive background investigation. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Stable work history and good moral character with no felony convictions or incidents of violence. Ability to work school hours, after‑school hours, and during city‑declared emergencies. Knowledge of federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances, and the department’s rules and procedures. Ability to operate motor vehicles in diverse conditions, use computers, exercise discretion, work independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively, and maintain composure under emergency and stressful conditions. Demonstrate proficiency with firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, and self‑defense techniques. Ability to adapt to changing technologies and practices, and to operate required radio equipment. Benefits & Compensation Flexible work schedule, approximately ten months per year (school year plus training). Travel and mileage compensation for off‑duty details within the school environment. Three sick days per year; vacation details not specified. Part‑time employees may purchase group health insurance with the city covering one half of the premium for those with over 1500 hours worked in the last fiscal year.
