Automotive Machinist Supervisor I

Under direction, the Automotive Machinist Supervisor I supervises a group of skilled automotive and heavy-duty mechanics in connection with major overhaul and reconditioning of all types of automotive, heavy truck and off-road equipment.

1. Plan and coordinate work assignments for group of automotive machinists engaged in disassembling, overhauling, repairing and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty and off-road equipment, using hand, power and machine tools including lathes, grinders, hydraulic and drill presses and welding equipment;

2. Supervise work activities of automotive machinists;

3. Inspects and review work in progress and completed work to ensure conformance to standard procedure and machine shop practices;

4. Inspect shop equipment, machinery and facilities to assure proper maintenance and cleanliness;

5. Prepare drawing and sketches in connection with the fabrication of tools and safety devices for machine shop use;

6. Requisition supplies, parts, and shop equipment, and maintain inventory records to ensure proper quality and quantity;

7. Prepare cost estimates on work orders and repairs;

8. Lead the vehicle and equipment intake process, which includes initiating required documentation, recording vehicle specifications, entering data into tracking systems, and supporting inventory setup for newly received assets;

9. Lead the outfitting process, which includes arranging for installation of specialized vehicles and equipment, and coordinating with external vendors and other Airport departments;

10. Manage the storage and disposal of waste generated by the shop, including hazardous waste such as used oil and gasoline;

11. Train and develop subordinate staff;

12. Perform other duties as listed in the 7254 Automotive Machinist Supervisor I class specification, which can be found on DHR's website.

Qualifications:

1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or High School Proficiency Examination);

AND

2. Experience:

a. A combination of journey-level experience and/or four (4)-year apprenticeship training as an automotive machinist or heavy-duty mechanic totaling eight (8) years, in which the major duties were disassembling, repairing, overhauling and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment;

AND

b. Two (2) years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity;

AND

3. License and Certification:

• Possession of a valid Class C (or III) driver's license; AND
• Eligible to obtain a Class B (or II) driver's license and Medical Certificate at the time of appointment.

NOTES: In addition to the above Minimum Qualifications, this position at the San Francisco International Airport requires the following:

• The hours for this position are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
• Candidates must be able to obtain a Class A Driver's License with Medical Certificate within twelve (12) months of the time of appointment. Failure to maintain the required license may be cause for termination.

Nature of Work: involves some physical effort and considerable dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body; continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor injuries may occur. Selection Procedures:

Oral/Performance Examination (Weight: 100%)

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an Oral/Performance examination designed to determine their relative knowledge, skill, and ability levels in job-related areas. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final passing score.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability: Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in machine shop work; various metals and their characteristics and methods of cutting and machining them; machine shop safety devices and precautions. Plan, assign and supervise the activities of subordinate craftsmen; maintain shop operating records and prepare related reports; prepare drawings and sketches in connection with machine shop work.
