RN ICU Duties and Responsibilities in Illinois

In Illinois,  Registered Nurses (RNs) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)are responsible for providing advanced, specialized care to critically ill or post-surgical patients. Their role requires a high level of clinical judgment, coordination with the healthcare team, and adherence to strict safety and documentation standards.

Core Duties

• Assessment & Monitoring: Continuously assess patients’ mental, physical, and spiritual needs; monitor vital signs, neurological status, and overall condition, and report any changes promptly to the healthcare team
• Care Planning: St affing. Collaborate with physicians and other disciplines to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans
• Medication & Treatment Administrati d monitor complex medical devices such as ventilators, monitors, feeding tubes, and infusion pumps 
• Pre-threatening situations, including cardiac arrest, sepsis, or sudden deterioration
• Patient & Family Support: Provide clear explanations and instructions to patients and families; offer emotional support and education about care and recovery Velvet Jobs +1 .
• Documentation: Maintain complete, accurate, and timely medical records, including nursing assessments and interventions 
• Infection Control: Follow strict protocols to prevent the spread of infection in the ICU environment 

• Professional Development: Participate in continuing education to stay current with critical care practices and technology

Required Licensure & Certifications

• Current Illinois RN license  
• CPR/BLS certification (often required) 
• ACLS certification relevant to intensive care settings 
• Additional certifications such as  CCRN or  PALS may be preferred or required depending on the facility
