Position Summary The Police Officer is responsible for the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws and parking regulations. This position is governed by law enforcement standards, state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy. Job Duties and Responsibilities Patrol assigned areas to detect and prevent crimes, enforce traffic laws, recognize parking violations, issue traffic citations, and identify safety hazards and violators. Perform security checks of campus buildings. Conduct investigations of crimes, accidents, and report incidents committed on campus. Direct traffic during periods of high density to facilitate smooth flow. Arrest violators, write incident reports, and testify in court as required. Respond to alarms, calls for assistance, check for locked or unlocked buildings and offices, and assist stranded motorists and others in need. Monitor security and fire panels, assist with alarm systems and emergency power supply, and inspect and maintain fire extinguishers. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of traffic laws, rules and regulations related to security. Knowledge of general law enforcement methods and techniques. Ability to direct traffic and maintain order. Ability to prepare reports of incidents and accidents. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to operate motor vehicles used in patrol duties. Skills Considered Essential for Success Knowledge of the organization and administration of higher education. Civility in all interactions. Demonstrate effective follow-up. Required Education and/or Experience The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license. Preference is to be certified by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Certification Training in accordance with ACA 12‑9‑106, or an approved law enforcement training academy or the ability to become certified. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. Other job‑related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee. Background Check This position may be subject to a pre‑employment criminal, sex‑offender registry, financial history background check and drug screening. A criminal conviction or arrest pending adjudication and/or adverse financial history alone shall not disqualify an applicant in the absence of a relationship to the requirements of the position.
