TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or equivalency
- At least five years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control systems, preferred
- Valid HVAC Journeyman's card and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification
- Valid North Carolina Driver License
NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class performs the full range of duties associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air conditioning and environmental control systems. A larger, costlier, exceptional, or more complex job may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine appropriate procedures and to assure that proper work methods are being followed. Employees receive work orders indicating the nature of the work to be done. They are expected to determine the materials, tools, and repair procedures needed. Errors may be quickly revealed or may only be located after involvement of a supervisor and may be costly to fix. Limited supervision is given to this employee.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory.
- Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.
- Working knowledge of electricity.
- Working knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems.
- Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.
- Ability to follow broad written or oral instructions.
- Ability to follow blueprints and diagrams.
- Ability to analyze building heating and air conditioning requirements and recommend systems or modifications.

- Follows all rules and procedures as required by Martin County Schools and the Maintenance Department.
- Performs skilled work and has vast knowledge in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems.
- Installs and has understanding of HVAC equipment and HVAC systems throughout the school system.
- Performs maintenance and repairs on a variety of heating, ventilation, and air condition equipment
- Installs conduit and wiring necessary for building automation system controls
- Has understanding on building automation systems and how they work
- Fabricates and installs piping and duct systems
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of the regulations and codes pertaining to school HVAC systems
- Inspects HVAC systems in school facilities.
- Plans and schedules replacement of HVAC equipment
- Troubleshoots and repairs faulty thermostats, sensors, wiring and controls
- Cleans, lubricates and performs routine service on all types of HVAC equipment
- Utilizes recycling and recovery equipment.
- Provides assistance to other crews as needed.
- Responds to after hour emergencies as requested.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS: The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the HVAC Mechanic II job classification within Martin County Schools. Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must be able to:
- Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
- Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
- Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
- Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
- Use a variety of measuring devices
- Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm's length
- Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools
- Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
- Observe general surroundings and activities
- Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
- Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
- Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work is typically performed in the Maintenance Department and all MCS worksites.
