Salary: $47,047.00 Annually Location : Western Piedmont Council of Governments, NC Job Type: Full-TIme Department: Transportation Planning Opening Date: 06/11/2026 Closing Date: 6/26/2026 11:59 PM Eastern FLSA: Non-Exempt General Statement of Duties The Transportation Technician will perform administrative, technical, and geographic information systems (GIS) support work for the Transportation Planning Department. This employee will prepare maps and graphics, support data analysis, maintain records and documentation, assist with MPO board and committee operations, and play an important role in supporting regional transportation initiatives by maintaining accurate geospatial data, preparing technical materials, and assisting staff with project coordination and reporting. This employee will serve as the contract Transportation Technician for members performing required transportation planning work contained within the contract-required work. Example of Duties Administrative & Program Support Provide daily administrative and technical support to Transportation Planning staff and department leadership. Coordinate logistics for MPO board and committee meetings (TAC, TCC, and advisory committees), including assembling agenda packets and supporting hybrid meeting formats. Record and prepare accurate and professional meeting minutes. Maintain physical and electronic filing systems in compliance with North Carolina public records retention requirements. Assist with department invoices, track project expenditures, and assist with the preparation of quarterly reimbursement reports to agencies such as NCDOT. Assist with formatting, editing, and proofing transportation plans, grant documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. GIS & Transportation Technical Support Develop clear, professional-quality maps and graphics for transportation studies, board presentations, grant applications, and public-facing documents using ESRI software. Support transportation planners in collecting, verifying, and analyzing demographic, socioeconomic, traffic, and transportation data for long-range transportation plans, Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) development, corridor studies, and prioritization processes. Perform routine spatial analysis and quality control checks to maintain accuracy of regional GIS datasets. Maintain and update transportation-related geospatial layers and databases. Assist with data visualization tools and interactive mapping applications used for MPO planning initiatives. Support preparation of materials related to locally administered projects and regional prioritization efforts. Additional job duties will be required as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Working knowledge of ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro preferred) Ability to learn new data systems, mapping tools, and project tracking platforms Strong written and verbal communication skills Exceptional attention to detail Demonstrated ability to prepare professional and accurate meeting minutes. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local governments, NCDOT staff, consultants, and the public Ability to work collaboratively in a regional planning environment Required Qualifications An associate's degree in geography, GIS, urban and regional planning, information technology, business administration, or related field. At least two (2) years of professional experience in GIS, administrative support, data management, or technical transportation planning support. An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted. Supplemental Information Work is performed primarily in an office environment, with occasional field support as needed. Western Piedmont Council of Governments is a member of the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees ' Retirement System. This entitles you to a defined benefit at the time of retirement if you are vested with at least five years of employment. Members contribute 6% of gross compensation each month. This is a before-tax deduction. Western Piedmont Council of Governments contributes an actuarially determined percentage of the gross payroll of members each month. Western Piedmont Council of Governments contributes 5.2% of each employee's salary to the employer-sponsored retirement plan of the employee's choosing. Additionally, WPCOG will match up to 4% of each employee's salary for a total possible employer contribution/match of 9.2%. Western Piedmont Council of Governments pays 100% of an employee's health and vision coverage (employee only). The current plan is a high-deductible health plan with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Contributions to the H.S.A. are made pre-tax through payroll deduction. Western Piedmont Council of Governments pays 100% of the following premiums: Life Insurance- $100,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment Dental Insurance-Employee and Family Short-Term Disability(Weekly Indemnity) Long-Term Disability Western Piedmont Council of Governments provides for the following payroll deduction and retirement options: NC 457 Retirement Plans, which have loan provisions NC 401(k )Plans, which have loan provisions Local Government & State Employees' Credit Union payroll deductions Additional voluntary life insurance, accident, and critical illness insurance Western Piedmont Council of Governments provides the following provisions: 12 paid holidays per year Sick leave accrues at 1 day per month (8 hours). Annual leave accrued on a sliding scale: Years of Aggregate Service Earned Hours Per Month Earned Days Per Year 5 years or less10 hours15 days5+ years, less than 10 years12 hours18 days10+ years, less than 15 years14 hours21 days15+ years16 hours24 days Longevity Pay is subject to annual appropriations by the WPCOG Board and may be reduced proportionately to the schedule below based on budget amounts. Paid in both July and November.
