Job SummaryThe role of a respiratory therapist encompasses the evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and education for patients experiencing cardiopulmonary disorders, sleep disorders, or related complications. Responsibilities include:
- Assessing patients to prevent, identify, monitor, and manage diseases and their complications.
- Implementing therapeutic interventions that positively influence cardiopulmonary health and overall well-being, in alignment with established goals and interdisciplinary care plans.
- Providing education aimed at promoting preventive care, self-management, and improved quality of life.
- Conducting regular assessments of patients and their equipment to modify therapy as needed.
- Collecting and analyzing blood and other specimens to evaluate levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases.
- Measuring lung capacity to identify any impairments and offering diagnostic results along with treatment recommendations based on patient analysis.
- A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program is mandatory; at least an associate degree or equivalent as recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Comprehensive knowledge of all procedures, indications, contraindications, and risks associated with respiratory care, as well as familiarity with the equipment used in the department.
- Proficiency in utilizing computers for patient documentation and data collection to ensure quality care.
- Completion of orientations, competency validations, and other required training as specified by the department and organization.
- Current Respiratory Therapy licensure in the state(s) of practice and/or multi-state licensure privileges as necessary for the position.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with active status maintained according to credentialing requirements.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is essential. Additional site-specific specialty certifications such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required.
