Maintenance Mechanic

Johnson Service Group (JSG) is a professional search firm, seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to join the Maintenance team with one of our premier food manufacturing clients. Primary Purpose The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the upkeep of buildings and mechanical systems, such as heating, cooling and refrigeration systems. Maintenance mechanics are expected to perform emergency electrical and mechanical repairs, which necessitates the ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot/diagnose both electrical and mechanical issues. Maintenance mechanics work with production machines, such as Multivac, Weber, Provisur, PFM, Copeland, ferrite, Carlyle, Hayssen, AEC Chillers, Triangle, Multipond and Yamato. This position will also work on various computer-based programs such as Allen Bradley Panel view and micro logic programming, Allen Bradley, Sew and other different motor control drives. Responsibilities Install conduit, pipes or tubing inside designated partitions, walls or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits. Work from ladders, scaffolds or roof to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures. Use a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment. Assemble, install, test and maintain electrical or electrical wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus or fixtures using hand tools or power tools. Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers or other components. Maintain current electrician’s license. Direct or train workers to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures. Test electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices. Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Inspect electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment such as motors. Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous. Provide preliminary sketches or cost estimates for materials or service. Perform general maintenance tasks within the plant, including equipment repair, pneumatics, pump and motor repair, advanced mechanics, waste water controls, computerized operating systems (PLCs), HVAC and boiler systems. Respond to maintenance calls and needs within all areas of the plant. Observe, diagnose, service, and repair equipment effectively and efficiently. Complete preventative maintenance tasks per the established schedule. Actively work to minimize downtime and keep production running. Troubleshoot problems that occur and determine root cause solutions. Support the installation of new equipment and other maintenance tasks related projects as needed. Complete paperwork, documentation and checklists in a thorough, accurate and legible manner. Comply with all applicable safety, food safety and GMP policies. Inspect, diagnose problems and repair refrigeration systems as needed. Perform leak checks and system charging. Education, Qualities and Skills Required 3-5 years’ maintenance experience. Food industry experience preferred. Demonstrates a strong sense of urgency. Strong background in refrigeration systems – HVAC experience. Ability to use computer-based maintenance PM and Parts program. Must have own tools. Knowledge of PLC software strongly preferred. Ability to prioritize multiple demands. Remain calm under pressure. Effective troubleshooting. Focus on root cause determination and solution. Effective communication with all levels of the organization. Self-motivated with a strong work ethic. Work effectively independently, as well as with a team. Safety conscious. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus. Understands and abides by GMP’s and food safety guidelines. Supervisory Responsibility No direct supervision required. Work Environment Work occurs in all areas of the plant and in varying temperatures from -15 to 100 degrees. Must be able to stand or walk continuously throughout the shift, lift up to 50 lbs, and bend, squat, crouch, twist, push/pull, grip, grasp, etc. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time, hourly position, Monday through Friday. Expectation is to work the hours scheduled by the maintenance manager, and gain approval from the manager before working hours outside of that schedule. Physical Requirements Frequent standing and walking required. Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally. Walk long distances, sometimes on wet, uneven and slippery surfaces. Climbing or moving on steps, stairwells, walkways and platforms. Carrying, lifting, lowering, pushing and pulling heavy and awkward objects or loads up to 50 lbs. Pushing or pulling heavy roller carts, bins or transport containers. Frequent static and/or awkward postures with neck and spine flexion while grasping, pinching, pulling, lifting, extending, flexing hands and arms. Various arm and hand movements required to apply force, movement and repetition. Using and maintaining a variety of knives, hand tools, powered tools and equipment, electrical devices, controls and motorized vehicles. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction from supervisors and designated staff. Exposed to temperatures between 33-50°F. Compensation and Benefits The budgeted salary range for this position is $28-$33 per hour.
