Produce Clerk

The Produce Clerk primarily cuts, portions and/or weighs fresh produce, places it in the appropriate container and labels it to be placed on display for sale.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Cut, weigh and package various produce items such as papaya, melons, pineapples, etc.
• Portion out, weigh and package various produce items such as apples, beans, etc.
• Place produce in various containers such as trays wrapped with plastic, plastic bags with twist ties or clear plastic containers with lids for proper display
• Stock and rotate department products to ensure freshness and date control
• Operate department equipment and tools such as sharp knives, scales, and wrapping device
• Retrieve, load and unload products and merchandise onto cart to move from back storage room to prep room
• Retrieve, load and unload products and merchandise onto cart to move from prep room to displays
• Provide attention to customer needs; greet, assist and thank customers in a prompt, courteous and friendly manner.
• Keep work area clean, orderly, and free from safety hazards; Maintain awareness of floor conditions; ensure all safety measures are taken to protect customers, vendors and employees
• Report all accidents promptly to manager on duty
• Promptly report maintenance and safety issues to manager on duty
• Attend and participate in departmental and store meetings
• Maintain punctuality and good attendance in compliance with company policies
• Perform other work-related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position

Secondary duties and responsibilities may include:

• May perform general cleaning duties such as mopping and sweeping
• Assist with the unloading of delivery trucks
• Assist manager on duty with any area throughout the store when needed or scheduled

Minimum requirements include:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred; minimum of 18 years of age

Competencies, skills and/or qualifications include:

• Ability to properly use department equipment such as knives, wrapping device, scale, etc. to accomplish the essential duties of the position
• Possess adequate knife handling skills and knife speed
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to read and speak English and Spanish preferred
• Ability to understand and follow instructions in both English and Spanish preferred
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small group situations with managers, customers (both internal and external) and the general public
• Takes responsibility for own actions
• Ability to work hours and days scheduled, including holidays and weekends
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
• Basic mathematical skills; ability to use and understand weights and measures

The individual performs duties in a grocery store environment. He or she maintains frequent contact with supervisors, employees, vendors and customers. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

In this position, there is the possibility of using gloves, knives, case cutters, wrapping device, scale, stock cart, pallet jack, coolers, ice machines, baler and cleaning supplies and equipment. The use of a powered pallet jack requires safety training; incumbent shall not use a powered pallet jack without such training.
