Position Summary:

Summa Health Akron Campus is seeking an experienced and adaptable Registered Nurse for a fast-paced Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit providing care to adolescent through geriatric patients with a wide variety of medical and surgical conditions. This role requires a clinically strong nurse who is comfortable managing diverse patient populations and rapidly changing assignments throughout the shift.

The ideal candidate will possess strong Med Surg and telemetry experience, excellent prioritization skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic acute care environment.

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5 – 1:6
• Trauma Level: Level I Trauma Center

Unit Overview:

This 36-bed Medical/Surgical unit provides 24/7 nursing care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients requiring acute hospitalization and nursing intervention.

The unit specializes in caring for patients with:

• General Surgery
• Colorectal Surgery
• General Abdominal Surgeries
• Mastectomy
• Thyroidectomy
• Urology
• Women’s Health
• Gynecology & GYN Oncology
• Uro-Gyn
• Plastic Surgery
• ENT
• Trauma
• Cardiothoracic
• Orthopedic
• Spinal/Neuro Overflow

The unit also provides care for patients experiencing obstetrical complications including:

• Intra-Uterine Fetal Demise (IUFD)
• Preeclampsia
• Hyperemesis
• Substance Abuse Withdrawal During Pregnancy
• Diabetic Pregnancies

This is a high-acuity, fast-paced unit where nurses must be flexible and prepared to manage varying patient populations throughout the shift.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to medical, surgical, telemetry, and specialty patient populations.
• Perform thorough patient assessments and monitor for changes in condition.
• Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and facility protocols.
• Monitor telemetry and recognize/report cardiac rhythm changes.
• Manage post-operative, trauma, and overflow patients requiring acute nursing interventions.
• Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate patient care.
• Provide safe, patient-centered care in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Documentation & Compliance

• Accurately document patient care within the Epic EMR system.
• Follow hospital policies, patient safety standards, and infection control procedures.
• Ensure compliance with medication administration and nursing documentation standards.

Patient & Family Education

• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
• Provide compassionate and professional patient care while supporting patient recovery and safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

• Graduate of an ACEN or CCNE accredited nursing program required.

Licensure & Certifications

• Active RN License required.
• Current BLS Certification required.

Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of 2 years of recent Medical Surgical nursing experience required.
• Recent Epic EMR experience within the last 12 months required.
• Previous telemetry experience strongly preferred.
• Experience in fast-paced acute care settings required.

Candidates requesting more than 7 days of RTO or requesting block scheduling will be automatically rejected.

Additional Assignment Details: Floating required based on facility needs. Solid black scrubs required. No block scheduling requests accepted. Maximum of 7 days RTO allowed during assignment. No RTO permitted during the first two weeks of assignment.
