Provides preventive health services to facilitate the students optimal physical, mental,
emotional and social growth and development. Identifies problems and disabilities and
provides such services as case finding, health education, referring and care in order to
help prevent serious health problems which would later be more difficult and costly to
address. Supports the education process by working to assure the health of the students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Serves as the healthcare expert in the school to promote and facilitate healthy student development and positive student response to healthcare interventions
Facilitates and/or performs health assessments
Obtains a health history
Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc.
Utilizes and collaborates with community resources to conduct screenings at the state mandated screening grade levels
Observes the student for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment
Identifies abnormal health findings and shares with appropriate parties involved in the student's education
Where applicable, develops and implements an individualized student health plan (IHP)
Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel. Shares IHP with designated school personnel on a need to know basis
Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through. Works with parents and school personnel to initiate student health referrals/ interventions. Has a good working knowledge of community resources
Provides ongoing health counseling & education with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies
Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students
Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
Plans and implements school health management protocols
Participates in home visits to assess the family needs as related to the students health
Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses
Knowledge of School immunization requirements for school entry in the State of Tennessee
Promotes healthy behaviors to prevent communicable diseases
General knowledge of communicable diseases & recommendations of the CDC & Health Department for handling of cases of communicable disease
Provides age-specific health education and anticipatory guidance per the eight components of CDC's Coordinated School Health Model and the fourteen Tennessee state health standards:
Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health
Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health
Provides health services as needed for transportation of students
Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices
Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction
Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community
Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for ?the school district
Implements medical procedures for students with special needs in the school setting as prescribed by a physician
Provides district-approved training to non-medical staff members in the school. Training may include, but is not limited to: Asthma awareness, how to administer Epi Pen, how to assist students with diabetes management, seizure awareness, concussion awareness, AED use
Performs other duties as assigned or directed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
B.S.N. or Registered Nurse with a bachelors degree in a related discipline
Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing
Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems, philosophies, laws, regulations, and procedures; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.
ADA COMPLIANCE:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers.
