Nurse Practitioner

Job Overview UConn Health is searching for a highly skilled Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant with experience caring for stroke patients. This position is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in delivery of direct clinical care services. The role will work in the In-Patient Stroke Service in Farmington, CT. Work Schedule This is a full‑time salaried position, 12‑hour shifts; includes weekends and holidays; nights 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., 30‑minute unpaid meal break. Must be flexible to accommodate departmental needs. Supervision Works under the general direction of the Director of Stroke Service and the Program Director for Advanced Practice Staff. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Considerable knowledge of stroke and neurologic evaluation. Considerable knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of advanced practice and therapeutic models in Stroke/Neurology. Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of pharmacology as it relates to advanced practice; knowledge of different disciplines and disease states. Skill in performing specialty‑specific invasive procedures, e.g. LP, NGT insertion and removal. Oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively assess physical and psychosocial conditions. Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. Ability to work independently. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to formulate appropriate treatment plans. Decision‑making ability. Sample Responsibilities Evaluates, assesses patient illness/injuries. Completes thorough history and physical examinations; conducts special neurological exams. Formulates and implements treatment and therapeutic plans. Independently conducts daily hospital and progress notes. Responds to Stroke Alerts and provides initial care management decisions in‑patient and ED. Provides ED and inpatient consults. Manages inpatients and DOC patients. Intervenes in crisis situations or patient deterioration. Provides routine and illness care. Orders medications; orders diagnostic tests and evaluates results. Assumes responsibility for patient follow‑up, coordination, facilitates patient referrals to appropriate providers and other health‑care disciplines as necessary. Maintains continuity of care through facilitation of out‑patient follow‑up visits. Maintains patient medical records. Fields patient/family calls at night. May develop policies/procedures; participates in or designs changes in the system of care delivery; may participate in clinical research; provides patient counseling/education; participates in medical student and health professional teaching; acts as a clinical consultant to peers and other health‑care professionals. Participates in patient safety and quality assurance initiatives. Participates in research studies as applicable. Precepts APP students and orients new APP staff. Maintains active participation in own continued education and professional development. Performs related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Must possess and maintain a licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Connecticut or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the specified specialty. APRN: Registered Nurse with completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program; or bachelor’s degree with completion of a two‑year accredited and approved Nurse Practitioner certification program; must be a Certified Advanced Practice Nurse; preferred AG‑ACNP/ACNP certification. PA: Master’s degree and completion of a two‑year accredited and approved physician assistant certification program; must possess and maintain licensure to practice in the State of Connecticut. Special Requirements Must possess and maintain American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification for healthcare providers. Other CPR/AED credentials may be accepted at hire but incumbents will be required to obtain AHA BLS & ACLS certification within six months of hire and maintain through employment. Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (may complete training during orientation). Preferred Qualifications Neurology and stroke experience. Two years Surgical Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner experience with at least one year of neurological experience. AG‑ACNP/ACNP certification. Working Conditions Incumbents may be exposed to communicable and infectious diseases.
