Primary Responsibilities

• Level 1
  • Maintain effective workflow and operations to ensure samples are handled successfully.
  • Prepare histology specimens for review and for other procedures.
  • Perform maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Responsible for completion of all safety and preventative maintenance logs on a daily basis.
  • Comply with all State and professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
  • Adhere to CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
• Level 2
  • All responsibilities listed for Level 1 plus
  • Examine slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is meeting laboratory requirements and standards.
  • Operate equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved.
  • Perform recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains.
  • Competent in at least 3 of 5 areas in Histology (embedding, microtomy, grossing, special stains, and immunohistochemistry).
  • Competent in processing Cytology.
  • Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing and staining of specimens.
• Level 3
  • All responsibilities listed for Level 1 and 2 plus
  • Exercise independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
  • Competent in all areas of Histology and Cytology (embedding, microtomy, grossing, special stains, immunohistochemistry and processing cytology).
  • Exhibit basic/non-complex problem solving and troubleshooting of instruments.
  • Begin and complete all assignments with minimal supervision.

  • All responsibilities listed for Level 1, 2, and 3 plus
  • Train and direct Laboratory Assistants and Histology Technicians/Technologists engaged in laboratory testing and processing techniques.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and track all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
  • Drive Quality Improvement initiatives and seek ways to improve performance and service.
  • Recommend and assist in review of Standard Operating Procedures for the designated area.
  • Problem solve complex challenges and troubleshoot instruments with no supervision.

Requirements

• Technician: High School Graduate or equivalent and have a current NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician/Histotechnician License.
• Technologist: Minimum of Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory or Life Sciences and have a current NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Histotechnologist License.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test.
• Successful completion of annual education units per state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.
• Strong communication skills.
• Strong computer skills.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Level 2 and 3: Must meet all base requirements plus.
  • 2-5 years related work experience
• Lead: Must meet all base and Level 2 & 3 requirements plus.
  • 6 or more years related work experience
