Safety Manager - Civil Infrastructure

We are looking for a Safety Manager to join our team to support projects in our Heavy Civil Infrastructure market, which includes supporting civil scopes of Power, Water, as well as roadway, bridge, aviation and rail/transit. In this role, you will be responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and management of all safety programs for projects that are typically greater than $250M in scope. We are looking for a strong leader, with experience managing safety for large, complex construction projects with many stakeholders, and large teams. This role requires excellent communication skills, a strong safety record on prior projects, extensive knowledge of safety regulations, and a proactive approach to risk management in the construction industry, particularly in the Heavy civil market. District Overview Kiewit’s Central District is one of our largest infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, structural concrete/bridge, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. We self‑perform work such as mass grading, drainage, paving, underground piping, underground utility infrastructure, and more – so be ready to get your hands dirty! While headquartered in Denver, Colorado, most of our work is concentrated in the Central and South‑Central regions of the United States. We are looking for people committed to the construction industry rather than design. Our projects can be in any of the following states: CO, WY, NM, MN, MT, NE, KS, MO, IA, ND, SD, KY, TN, and some parts of TX. Location This is a full‑time role with Kiewit, supporting projects around the country, which could include any of the following states: CO, WY, NM, TX, ND, SD, MO, KS, NE, IA, MT, MN, KY or TN. We provide relocation or per diem/trips home. Responsibilities Develop and execute a comprehensive safety strategy aligned with project and company goals. Manage the project environmental health and safety programs, driving a safety-oriented approach to work. Compile, analyze, and interpret occupational illness and accident statistical data at the project level; recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employee exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards. Routinely inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure safety regulation compliance. Monitor the workforce for unsafe behaviors and coach employees on corrective actions when observed. Develop environmental health and safety training materials including manuals, brochures, PowerPoint presentations, etc. Create a paperwork management system to track training records and all safety training initiatives conducted personally or by outside consultants/vendors. Interpret safety regulations for the project. Coordinate and present safety training to support client requirements including new hire orientation, fall protection, confined space, lockout/tagout and repertory. Interface with OSHA (provincial or federal) officials/inspectors during site visits. Lead and mentor a team of safety professionals. Conduct safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations. Direct incident investigations and oversee development of corrective action plans. Provide executive-level reports on safety performance and metrics for the project. Collaborate with senior management and project teams to integrate safety into all aspects of the project. Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in safety practices. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Minimum of 10+ years of experience in safety management within the self‑perform construction industry, with a focus on heavy civil infrastructure. Experience as a safety manager on large projects ($250M and up) is required. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification preferred. Extensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards. Proven leadership and team management skills. Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in safety management software and tools. Other Requirements Regular, reliable attendance. Work productively and meet deadlines timely. Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment. Perform work safely and effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies. Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
