Custodian Position

The Town of East Hartford is seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join our team at the Senior Services Center. This position is responsible for performing general cleaning and minor maintenance duties to ensure town buildings, adjacent walks and grounds, and equipment are maintained in a clean, orderly, and functional condition. The Custodian also provides assistance to officials, staff, visitors, and other employees as needed. Supervised by: Receives general supervision from the Building Superintendent. Essential Job Functions

• Receives oral or written orders from supervisor.
• Performs work according to standard procedure and by building's operational schedule.
• Cleans rooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, stairways, and windows.
• Uses brooms, mops, and floor equipment to sweep, mop, strip, and wax floors.
• Uses vacuum cleaners to clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
• Dusts furniture and equipment.
• Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
• Empties wastebaskets.
• Replenishes rest room supplies.
• Replaces light bulbs.
• Sets up and tears down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting rooms and function rooms.
• Prepares rooms for use by private organizations.
• Clears snow from entrances.
• Picks up and delivers supplies and materials to rooms.
• Follows all applicable safety rules and procedures.
• Reports work accomplished orally or on written work order to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.

• Basic building maintenance and safety procedures.
• Proper handling and storage of cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, carpet cleaners).
• Ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs using hand and power tools.
• Good time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds.
• Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
• Ability to interact courteously with officials, staff, and the public.

Job Qualifications and Licensing

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in building cleaning and maintenance work preferred.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but straightforward oral or written instructions.
• Ability to relate to officials, staff, and the public in a courteous manner.
• Ability to acquire job skills with three months of on-the-job training.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25–50 pounds.
• Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
