Maintenance Mechanic

The purpose of this position is to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in Engineering Services, at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System. Performs the duties of a fully trained construction specialist. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Must be knowledgeable at a journeyman level to operate power tools such as gasoline powered trowel machine, concrete vibrators, jack hammers, mixers, masonry saws, and hand tools such as floats, trowels, screeds, shovels, rakes, chisels, and Georgia buggies. Ability to read and interpret instruction manuals, drawings, and blueprints. Possess knowledge to make independent judgment in determining work sequence, selection and use of trade tools and the techniques applied may provide technical assistance to other workmen. Have general knowledge to repair desks, furniture, chairs, shelves, filing cabinets, doors and door frames, chair rail, and corner guard. Must have knowledge to hang wood and metal doors with proper clearance on different types and locations; also to bore and install different types and styles of locks. Preferred Experience: Candidate must have a minimum of 1 year experience as a commercial carpenter. Selective Placement Factor: Candidate must be capable of drywall installation/removal, suspended and drywall ceiling layout/installation concrete floor prep and leveling, LVT installation/removal, metal stud layout/installation, commercial metal door frame layout/installation, and demolition of these same items. Quality Ranking Factor: Candidates that possess verifiable experience as a team or job-site commercial carpenter leader. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires strenuous exertion in building, removing or replacing walls, floors; requires standing for long period of time, working in heated or cold areas. Incumbent must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in an awkward position Must handle heavy tools (i.e. drills at arm's length and overheat from time to time). Must unload from trucks and place on storage racks such heavy and bulky materials as plywood, wallboard, hardboard, and other types of lumber and materials. Must work throughout all areas of Medical Center. In some cases, incumbent must go in out-of-the-way areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basement, etc. which may require kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, etc. Frequently handles objects weighing 10 - 90 pounds. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours. Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. May occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. May be called upon to work overtime and call-back in cased o emergencies. The ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures, confined, dusty, dirty areas, and hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics preferred but not mandatory. WORKING CONDITIONS: Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
