Research Support Manager - Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) in the Department of Biostatistics

Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) in the Department of Biostatistics is seeking a Research Support Manager to manage a large portfolio of federal and private funding. This position will be responsible for reconciling monthly account statements, providing up-to-date projections based on project-specific budgets, providing reports on the fiscal health of the CTSDMC to leadership, and managing all post-award responsibilities related to grants and contracts funding in the unit. This position may also provide research administration support on the pre-award side of CTSDMC grant development. This position joins a team of research support professionals to ensure the operational and financial aspects of the CTSDMC are supported.

Responsibilities:

Grant Exploration and Development:

Participate in the pre-award preparation of grant applications at the CTSDMC.

Advise on the development of project budgets to ensure adequate cost coverage for CTSDMC expenditures.

Prepare budgets for grant, contract, and subaward renewals, and periodic reports in accordance with federal, UI, and private foundations policies/deadlines.

Coordinate information related to funded projects between PIs, Sponsoring Agencies, the Division of Sponsored Programs, and Grant Accounting.

Post-Award Administration/Financial Responsibility:

Assume overall responsibility for managing all funded grants/contracts in the CTSDMC, under the directions of the Director of Finance. Includes post-award management of complex, inter-related accounts/projects, from both federal and non-federal funding sources.

Analyze and reconcile monthly financial statements for a multi-million-dollar portfolio of external funding. Independently and proactively monitor and forecast expenditures and provide ongoing financial projections from grant budgets.

Monitor faculty and research staff effort across numerous projects. Recommend and process personnel change of status forms to ensure grants stay within budget and comply with federal/University grant regulations.

Monitor and forecast non-grant accounts associated with the CTSDMC.

Provide reports on overall health of the CTSDMC financial portfolio.

Advise faculty and/or staff on the appropriateness of expenditures, contract or grant requirements, and changes in policies and procedures related to purchasing on grant funds.

Process requisitions for subcontracts, prepare required documents; monitor subcontract purchase orders to ensure subawardee institutions invoicing and payments are prompt. Recommend corrective actions, if necessary.

Initiate and monitor Professional Service Agreements (PSAs) including initiating amendments as appropriate and monitoring for performance and compliance. Recommend corrective actions, if necessary.

Assist in the year-end closing of accounts and preparation of financial reports and annual budget close-out.

Compliance:

Monitor compliance with contract/ grant terms in accordance with University policies and state and federal regulations.

Operational/Administrative Support:

Initiate and prepare accurate and timely reports, analyses, and supporting data for a complex portfolio of research funding.

Provide necessary training and support based on new and/or changing guidelines.

Review and approve routine financial transactions and purchases.

External Communications and Negotiations:

Communicate with University of Iowa units to assure compliance, adherence to policies, and status tracking.

Communicate with external funding agencies and other sponsor on a variety of grant management and budgeting areas, as needed.

Participate in project-specific meetings as needed to provide grant administration support.

Leadership/Supervision:

Establish work priorities for assigned staff and student workers, as applicable.

Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

Serve as liaison to faculty, staff, and students, University departments, other universities, NIH and other sponsors regarding interpretation of policies, procedures and programs.

Required:

A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting or similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.

Minimum of three years of experience in the post-award administration of grants and contracts, including experience developing and managing budgets for federal, state, and/or private funders in a higher education setting.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as demonstrated at an extensive proficiency level.

Accuracy and attention to detail, as demonstrated at an extensive proficiency level.

Extensive proficiency in Microsoft computer programs, particularly Excel.

Desirable:

Experience managing awards from the National Institutes of Health.

Experience in pre-award grant preparation for federal and/or private sponsors.

Working knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations.

Experience working with the University of Iowa Research Information System (UIRIS) and University of Iowa financial reports.

Position and Application Details:

This position is eligible for on campus, hybrid within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment.
