Strycker’s Bay Neighborhood Council (SBNC) is a grassroots, community-based organization that has served the Upper West Side and Harlem since 1959. Our mission is to give families and children access to the tools, resources, and knowledge that empower them to break the cycle of poverty and improve their quality of life. Operating with an open-door policy, SBNC serves as a neighborhood anchor offering after-school programming, tutoring, summer camp, youth workforce development, eviction prevention assistance, and family support. Our staff bring deep knowledge of the neighborhood and of the challenges low-income families face as they work toward school success. Although the Upper West Side is often viewed as affluent, significant poverty exists within its neighborhoods. The area is home to more than 32,000 children under age 18; 11.4% of families live below the federal poverty level, and 25% are food insecure [add source and year]. In this fourth and final project year, the VISTA will help SBNC make its family education engagement work permanent by documenting program systems, creating family advocacy tools, training staff and parent leaders, strengthening school and community partnerships, and developing a sustainability plan. The children facing the greatest economic hardship also face the steepest barriers to accessing local educational resources, and too many low-income students experience poor academic outcomes as a result. Strycker's Bay works to close that gap by meeting families where they are and connecting them directly to the supports they need to succeed. Member Duties : The VISTA Community Engagement Coordinator will develop materials/plans to conduct outreach efforts & recruit local residents to join a community team; engage community residents in ongoing meetings to develop a family-centered community plan; facilitate brainstorming and planning; document data; and equip the community team to act on planned initiatives, including collaborating with other service providers. The VISTA will develop a training plan for parents to support their efforts to advocate for their children and collaborate with professionals who provide training. This VISTA will build agency capacity through the creation of an educated and active advisory body of community members who will engage in ongoing work with partners to sustain the project’s efforts to achieve educational equity. You will be managed on-site by a supervisor, work with three other VISTAs, and receive mentoring. You will attend a Pre-Service Orientation, On-Site Orientation, and ongoing training.
