Opportunity Overview
The Program Director (PD) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at our medical center, including the clinical care provided by both residents and faculty. The PD is tasked with creating and implementing strategic initiatives aimed at attracting, training, and retaining high-quality residents. This role ensures that residents receive an exceptional training experience while adhering to the standards set by ABIM, ACGME, and our organization. This is a full-time position, with 0.7 FTE allocated to administrative duties and 0.3 FTE dedicated to clinical responsibilities.
Leadership Responsibilities
Develops, organizes, and leads program strategies, objectives, and operations, ensuring compliance with ABIM, ACP, ACGME, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory requirements.
Oversees faculty, residents, and administrative personnel regarding recruitment, performance assessments, compensation, disciplinary actions, and professional development.
Assigns faculty to teaching positions within the residency program, monitors the quality of education provided, and has the authority to remove faculty who do not meet program standards.
Manages the resident recruitment process, including application evaluations, interviews, and the submission of the rank order list to the National Resident Match Program (NRMP).
Acts as a proactive leader and advocate for the program's interests in discussions with key stakeholders within our organization.
Handles all financial aspects of the program, including the operating budget, foundation and grant support, Medicare funding for graduate medical education, and the implementation of program policies related to travel and benefits in accordance with contractual and organizational requirements.
Exhibits leadership in internal medicine at local, regional, and national levels, enhancing the reputation of our Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Chairs and participates in relevant committees (e.g., GMEC, CCC, PEC, etc.).
Teaching and Mentorship
Mentors residents and medical students in Internal Medicine across various settings, including inpatient, intensive care, and outpatient environments.
Serves as a role model for residents.
Engages in and leads initiatives focused on quality improvement and patient safety.
Oversees the residency program's curriculum.
Actively participates in educational activities within the residency program, with specifics depending on professional qualifications. Regular involvement in clinical teaching across all sites is expected, including morning reports and teaching rounds, didactic conferences, and faculty development.
Manages the remediation and coaching of residents who are facing challenges, in collaboration with advisors and faculty.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provides direct patient care in outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care settings.
Participates in clinic, hospital, and call coverage duties, along with clinical supervision.
Additional Duties
Performs other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
A minimum of three years of documented experience in medical education and administration.
Educational and administrative experience that meets the standards of the ACGME Internal Medicine Review Committee.
Active involvement in patient clinical care.
Understanding of healthcare delivery and administration, including legal and ethical issues related to healthcare.
Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented management approach, soliciting input from relevant programs or individuals, communicating essential information, and supporting team decisions.
Skill in being persuasive and diplomatic to foster teamwork and cooperation in the pursuit of excellence.
Strong communication skills, with sound judgment and the ability to convey information effectively.
Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build constructive relationships across diverse backgrounds.
Capability to manage challenging or confrontational situations calmly and fairly.
Experience in supervising and delegating tasks effectively.
Aptitude for presenting information clearly and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional literature, technical procedures, and regulations.
Skill in representing the program's interests within the community and maintaining effective relationships with public, private, and professional groups.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
Current medical license in California and Board Certification in Internal Medicine.
