Lighting Designer I

Position The Lighting Designer I performs lighting design and documentation as the lead role on smaller projects and under the support of a senior lighting designer on larger, more complex projects. The individual is also responsible for mentoring the lighting design intern position. Candidates must have passed the LC exam and completed the required work experience to achieve LC professional licensure. Essential Functions Completing lighting calculations in AGI and reviewing calculations completed by lighting design interns and less experienced professionals to aid in fixture selections and layouts. Having extensive knowledge of the IES lighting handbook and associated Recommended Practice documents. Understanding typical lighting design criteria, including new and developing changes in the lighting design industry. Reviewing products and evaluating components, design quality of materials, maintenance issues, product quality, and providing recommendations for projects; reviewing comments and questions of junior staff on product selections and characteristics. Understanding the cost impact of lighting product selections and control systems—including general mark‑ups, labor costs, and typical $/SF budgets—and specifying within project budget. Being knowledgeable in lighting control systems; developing one‑line diagrams, details, and specifications with minimal supervision from a senior lighting designer. Having extensive understanding of national and local lighting and energy codes specific to each project and selecting products and completing design to meet these parameters. Leading coordination for the lighting design team with architects and other disciplines for RCP coordination, design intent, W/SF for mechanical, etc. Preparing presentation material for clients and presenting ideas clearly and concisely. Mentoring less experienced lighting design staff with drafting requirements, lighting design concepts, and the project design process. Editing lighting specifications with the supervision of a senior lighting designer. Taking ownership of a full design through all phases of a project with minimal supervision from a senior lighting designer. Performing in‑house and on‑site construction administration tasks. Documenting projects utilizing AutoCAD and Revit, and creating mark‑ups for drafting by others. Attending seminars and continuing education programs; participating in design, analysis, and documentation training. Performing other duties and responsibilities as required or requested. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Architecture. 0 to 3 years of experience. LC certification preferred. Proficiency in engineering calculation programs and equipment selection software. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Basic computer analysis skills.
